Customer Reviews

A great informal reference book.3
In his book "Absolute Beginner's Guide to Networking" Mark Gibbs has presented with humor and with evident mastery, a lasting reference work and a must read for those getting started in networking. It is time however for a rewrite and an update. The book was published in 1994 on material collected between 1992 and 1993. The industry has evolved to the point where much of the material is dated and in need of freshening.

Decent, but outdated2
A decent survey of networking issues, especially from the LAN (as opposed to WAN) viewpoint, but drastically in need of upddating. Lacks discussion of newest versions of NT and Novell, as well as contemporary implementations of Fast Ethernet and Switched Ethernet. Still a decent concerptual read for the beginner, but far from informative regarding the most current technologies.

Essential reference for the amateur networker5
As a recent novice to the world of networking this book is guiding me through my networking course and beyond. Just looking at the contents page it shows you the logical steps you need to follow when learning about networking starting with the basics. It includes essential theory on the OSI model and protocols as well as practical advice on setting up your own network. It covers all aspects of networking clearly and concisely with enough information for me to use on future courses. I've found many references in this book which are used by my lecturer so it must be the right track to learning about networking.
