A must for any Alessi fan.
This is an over priced kettle which is why I only rated it 4 out of 5. However, it looks gorgeous and makes a real talking point. I was amazed at how quiet it was and it switches off as soon as the water boils. This kettle does have some down points. The bird does not whistle and you will need to remove it with something like a tea towel to avoid getting scolded. It is also heavier than most kettles. Like most glass kettles it has a concealed element so it will need to be descaled regularly. If you rely on a water guage you might be a little disappointed as it only has a 'fill to here' marker inside. For me this is a thing of beauty and I wouldn't change this kettle. I am quite used to removing the bird and I use filtered water to cut down on descaling. I am also an Alessi fan if I wasn't it would probably only score 2 out of 5.
Great looks, very poor reliability
I absolutely love the look of this kettle and it has a solid 'quality' feel to it. However, I have just taken delivery of my 4th kettle - 3 replacements all due to electrical faults - shorting, switch giving up and element breaking. I live in a soft water area so scal not an issue, and our household is of 2 people who look after things so it is definitely not abused. In comparison my old plastic kettle is still going strong after 15 years.
The latest replacement is going on eBay as I know it will last about 6-12 months before developing a fault.
It looks good, but ......
I love the look of this kettle, but functionally, it's less attractive
If you have the whistling bird in the spout, you have to use oven gloves to remove it before pouring the water out, or else the steam scalds you, and with it being spring clipped into the spout, it fits snugly, so takes some effort to remove
Also, you can't pour the water whilst it's still bubbling in the kettle, or it splashes everywhere
Other than that, it's great ......
