Product Description
The First Thirty Years The provincial scene was never more interesting to the enthusiast than in Doncaster, where, apart from the municpal fleet and a wealth of company operators, a plethora of fascinating independents ran a network of lifeline services to outlying villages. Author Roger Holmes, who lived in Doncaster and saw, photographed and rode on the vehicles on those services, has - in this first volume - written of the first three decades of activity from such evocative names as Reliance, Blue Line, Premier, Blue Ensign and Leon Motors. The photographs are mainly from the author's collection - many of his own taking - and depict a remarkable array of chassis and body combinations. There was little standardisation in these fleets in the earlier years, much use of minor coachbuilders, and considerable use of second-hand machinery. These operators have fared poorly in the enthusiast press and this book redressed the balance.
