Average customer review:Product Description
This work includes a foreword by Roger Neighbour, President, Royal College of General Practitioners. In training, a great deal of time and attention is devoted to consultation skills. However, once these individuals become fully fledged, few have any formal opportunity to reflect further on them. It is assumed that they can now consult well enough and will continue to learn 'on the job'. Over the years, habits can become ingrained, and clinicians may not consider alternative approaches to consultations. Sometimes doctors and nurses only really start to think about consultations when something starts to go wrong. Don't wait until then! This book is ideal for practising professionals to check and improve their skills, particularly for those who have had little recent formal opportunity to do so. It is essential reading for all primary healthcare professionals with consulting responsibilities. "This book is exactly what it says on the tin: 'a practical guide to consultation skills for any health professional working in primary care'. The first part of the book presents the key features of most of the established consultation literature. The second part, of as much interest to teachers and trainers as to clinicians in training and in practice, reviews a wide array of current teaching and learning methods. It covers PUNs and DENs, working with colleagues, case discussion, role play and video in eminently practical ways. "The Naked Consultation" is a practical and readable vademecum for the would-be skilled consulter." - Roger Neighbour in his Foreword.

Cracking addition to the library
UK books concerning the consultation are typically perhaps more scholarly and somewhat less practical than a typical US one. Liz Moulton has produced a relatively concise and very practical offering, linked to the Calgary Cambridge synthesis.
What I liked.
The structure of the chapters flows very well. The text is concise and clear - and the text and chunks are very well broken up and presented making this an easily digestible book. Hence, one can easily maintain concentration and read it all the way, or equally dip in and out with clarity.
As I have already stated, the focus is immensely practical and whilst this is aimed at a primary care doctor, most of the suggestions are good for nurses and secondary care doctors as well.
What I didnt like
Not much really. I could suggest a little more referencing, perhaps bringing in a slightly wider range of theory.
Overall
5/5 for what it is trying to do. The most useful new consultation book in the UK for many years. Buy it (I dont have shares).
Consultation
Very good book for improving own consultation techniques and learning about old and new ones as well. Useful for MRCGP exams and as a general read as provides many useful realistic scenarios and examples. Style is witty and jesty and gave the book its humorous vein throughout.
