Interesting Introduction to Crete3
Unsworth's guide to Crete works from the West to the East of the Island, visiting the major sites and many of the minor ones. On the way, he discusses the history and culture of the island, its geology and wildlife and some of the results of the modern tourist industry. It's a short book and one which leaves the reader wanting to know more. It's illustrated with black and white images of key sites and it's an easy read. I would have liked to have found out more about Unsworth's own experiences, the people he met, the places he stayed. The book does not have the humour and energy of the best travel writing although there are some fine sections, in particular Unsworth's account of the hordes of people rushing through the Samaria Gorge.
