Synopsis
This volume contains over of the best-known and loved nursery rhymes. There are lullabies, action rhymes, nonsense verse, riddles and tongue-twisters. Each lavish double page has its own setting against which individual, thematically linked rhymes are illustrated. The artist has also introduced intriguing visual links from one scene to the next. Thus the Grand Old Duke of York goes up one side of a hill while, over the page, Jack and Jill tumble down the other side. This is a classic and hugely enjoyable nursery rhyme collection by one of the world's great picture book artists.

Customer Reviews

The BEST nursery rhymes collection, by far!5
When shopping for a Nursery Rhymes collection, I didn't expect to find it so difficult. All I wanted was to purchase a single tome containing all the best-loved rhymes from my own childhood, but I was hoping for an illustration to accompany every poem, in colour, if possible. I had to look high and low before discovering this gem - but it was definitely worth it!

Why do I love this volume so much? Well, firstly, in the 5 years since purchasing this book, I cannot find another collection with more rhymes than this one. Secondly, there are several full colour illustrations on each and every page. In fact, most pages are covered in a colour wash, rather than illustrated against a white background. I find the illustrative style to be very charming and the children just adore this book!

I was initially concerned that the book was not available in hardcover, but believe me - this book is extremely sturdy! And like the other reviewer, I have found one or two of the rhymes to have some variations on the rhymes I was taught, but I don't think this is critical. (When reading aloud, you can easily substitute your own endings, as desired.)

Overall, I cannot recommend this book enough and have purchased copies for several friends. It's a little treasure!

the ideal book for parents to teach kids their rhymes4
all of the nursery rhymes that we had forgotten bits of are here and the illustrations are lovely

a couple of rhymes aren't complete e.g. one two three four five ... (only 1 verse) - still its a very good book
