There is no shortage of people aspiring to employment in the world of politics, and no shortage of areas in which they can work.

MPs may have the highest profile, but the machinery of Parliament is kept going by servants of the House, such as clerks and library staff, while other parliamentary services include the compilation of Hansard. Employment opportunities with MPs include positions as researchers, secretaries and advisers. beyond the confines of the Palace of Westminster, the Civil Service presents a wide range of options. Then there is political journalism, lobbying, working for political parties, trade unions, think tanks, pressure groups and quangos, polling companies and dozens of other roles. In this book Sally Gillman, a careers adviser at the University of Staffordshire, provides a guide which will be essnetial reading for all who are contemplating working in the world of politics, and all who advise them.

Careers Guide4
Comprehensive book on how to really get into politics and the British government. Explainations of the fine details of working in several areas, ranging from the Foreign Office to working as a research assistant to a MP, and included interviews with people working in the specified jobs at the end of the chapters.
In some cases these interviews had an interesting perspective and not all interviewees had a political background. However the vast majority were quite limited to "Red Brick" graduates or those who had undertaken considerable volunteer experience before graduating.
Nevertheless, a very detailed book with handy hints on how to go about getting the "dream job" in those areas with web links, salary details and levels of job security included. A very good book for those seeking their first job in this area, or even those looking for work experience and only know about the well-known areas.
