Help save the nation's Bees?
I bought this for my Dad for his birthday. It seemed like something a little out of the ordinary and as my parents are keen gardeners, its something they can appreciate. I thought it was for a colony of bees to live in but its actually for individual bees/ ladybirds/ lacewings to hibernate/ shelter in.

As we all know bees pollinate plants allowing them to reproduce - so for a gardener you need to look after the bees so they can look after your flower border and vegetable patch! A bit different from a bird box and you don't have to be so careful about putting it out of reach of the cats.

Its actually quite a simple little thing and slightly smaller than I had imagined. I don't know if it really helps the bees or not but I like the idea. Especially since I've recently read reports that 'Wild bee populations around the UK are experiencing "catastrophic declines"' (BBC News 23 April 2008).

Quote from the BBC website:

'"Without pollination, flowering crops like beans, peas, strawberries and raspberries won't produce anything to harvest, and wildflowers won't produce any seeds.

"The loss of the nation's pollinators is likely to affect your dinner plate, and will change the wider countryside beyond recognition."

Mr Darvill said the "catastrophic declines" could be eased with help from farmers and the general public.'


I've given this a 4 star rating as I don't know if it actually helps the wild bee population (can anyone out there give us a more educated answer to this?) but I like the idea and the product.
