Synopsis
There are those who can cook and then there are those for whom boiling water is bit of a challenge. These are the people that top chefs John Burton Race and Angela Hartnett are going to try and teach to cook like Michelin star chefs in their new BBC2 series "Kitchen Criminals". Unlike any other television cookery show, this is about people who can't cook and viewers will watch how these culinary no-hopers are transformed into chefs good enough to pull the wool over the eyes of five of Britain's toughest critics. The accompanying book is ideal for anyone who knows nothing about cooking but would like to learn. Every step is simply explained with step-by-step photography. At the end of each section the reader will be able to cook the dish from scratch, whether it's a delicious roast chicken, pie with a perfect pastry top or a succulent risotto. Recipes range from classic French and English dishes to exotic Thai and Indian meals and from everyday meals to dishes for entertaining.

About the Author
John Burton Race is a top Michelin starred chef and highly successful restauranteur with a larger-than-life personality and a lifelong passion for great food. Born in Singapore, he spent his early years travelling and experiencing food from all over the world. His career as a chef progressed rapidly, and following a stint at Les Manoir aux Quat Saisons he became Head Chef of Le Petit Blanc. He opened his own restaurant L Ortolan in 1986 and then moved to John Burton Race at the Landmark Hotel in 2000 and was awarded two Michel stars at both restaurants. Since 2002 Channel 4 viewers have been following the lives of John and his family, firstly in French Leave, which charted their progress over a year in rural France and then in Return of the Chef when the family returned to England and settled in Dartmouth and John opened The New Angel which was awarded a Michelin star and the AA Restaurant of the Year award in its first year. In 2006, John represented the South West in BBC TVs successful Great British Menu series celebrating the nation s food and competing to cook the Queen s 80th birthday banquet. Angela Hartnett has been described by Gordon Ramsay as the new Elizabeth David. As on of the few female British chefs to hold a Michelin star at Gordon Ramsay at the Connaught, her innovative modern Mediterranean cooking has been commended by reviewers and chefs alike.

Finally, a true cookbook5
I'm an enthusaistic amateur with a wide variety of cookbooks covering many styles. This however, is one that I regularly return to. John Burton Race and Angela Harnett have written in a very open and easy style, but more importantly, the portion sizes, cooking times and temperatures are spot on which is an area that I find many other authors are weak with... also this isn't what might be termed "extravagant" restuarant food, it's just a great selection of fantastic quality, inventive yet achievable recipes. Thoroughly recommended, even if the book title is terrible!
