"The Pursuit of Stillwater Trout" - first published in 1975 and since reprinted and translated many times - is one of the acknowledged classics of modern angling literature. It had a profound influence on the development of flyfishing on lakes. Its author's advocacy of an approach based on observation and concentration - on floating lines, long leaders and small nymphs appropriately fished - offered anglers a completely thought-out and highly effective alternative to lure-fishing, at a time when lure-fishing looked set to dominate the stillwater scene. In this remarkable work, reprinted in its full original form and introduced by a new foreword, Brian Clarke sets out the step-by-step thought processes which enabled him to increase his catch-rate by several hundred per cent in just a couple of seasons. He provides unique photographs of the most important rise-forms trout make and shows how each kind of rise can be analysed to show what natural the fish has probably taken - and so what artificial might give the best chance of success. He gives the first detailed analysis of variations in the take to the nymph. And much more. But there is not simply information here. Brian Clarke is a writer as well as a fly-fisherman and his descriptions of the capture of some of the key fish in his life have all the excitement of a thriller.

Excellent guide to stillwater fishing
This book is a worthwhile addition to any stillwater angler's library, especially newcomers to the sport. Each of the sections is very clear and it demystifies a lot of things that a beginner comes up against.
The book is pitched at a perfect level and does not leave the reader feeling patronised, like some 'expert' fishing writers have a habit of doing. I picked it up as I switched to fishing for rainbows recently and have found it invaluable. I am not saying it is a miracle book and makes you a better fisher instantly, but it points you along at least one path to becoming one.
I think the only thing about this book is that it is geared for reservoirs and small stillwaters, so if you are looking for a book on wild brown fishing on stillwaters I would look else where, even though a lot of the ideas are relevant. If you fish on large or small stillwaters for rainbows and browns then this is the book for you if you have been struggling to catch the fish.
excellent book that demistifies the basics of fly fishing
an entertaining read, covers basics on how to read conditions and interpret fishy actions, also basic flies that work. some of the suggestions contained in the book have worked for me on the water!
