Synopsis
An age-old secret is at the heart of a gripping adventure for the Torchwood team in this exclusive story read by Naoko Mori outside the government, beyond the police, fighting for the future on behalf of the human race. Naoko Mori, who plays Toshiko in the hit BBC TV series created by Russell T Davies, reads this exclusive audio story by Steven Savile. Great story but leaves questions
Very much in the line of the other torchwood audio stories - there is a constant sense of the cliff hanger.
This one does baffle a lot and most of the time I had no idea what was going on or why.
The narrator's voice seemed tinny at first - not as good as Burn Gorman - but as the story progressed I noticed it less.
And at the end - I had no idea what had happened or why or why it had stopped.
Something about a man who lives forever - or did Jack kill him ? and did he create clones with dna damage ? How would that work in the middle ages as an alchemist? Who would care enough to run around killing people to hide it ? Still - a good ride and well told.
Hidden
Personally I've always felt that abridged audio recordings of Torchwood novels were rather superfluous, so a big thumbs up to BBC Audiobooks for giving us some original audio only adventures this time round. I therefore find myself somewhat frustrated that lead of story 'Hidden' isn't actually very good.
The storyline concerns a series of mysterious deaths which seem to have been commited by Captain Jack, and pit the team against a secret society dedicated to protecting the secrets of an ancient alchemist.
Captain Jack fans might be frustrated at his sidelining for most of the story, though the rest of the team all get sizable chunks of action. Saville writes well enough, though the story seems to take an age to unfold, a problem which may be exasapated by the audiobook format. The main problem with 'Hidden' is that we get an enormous amount of very slow build-up and investigation for very little return - the 'blink and you'll miss it' finale is terribly underwhelming with frustratingly glossed over story details and a gang of murderers seemingly left off the hook by Torchwood for no good reason.
Naoko Mori (Toshiko) does a good enough job reading the part, throwing in a few impersonations of the other team members accents, though the lack of any background effects or music makes this a rather dry listen.
A few exciting action scenes along the way, but ultimately 'Hidden' fails to deliver on it's promise.
A great listen
Set during series 1, 'Hidden' makes a great addition to the Torchwood universe. Savile's story utilizes all of the team, with each playing an important part in the investigation. The pace of the writing works very well in the audio format, absorbing the listener through both the descriptive images and the plot twists. I would recommend this to all Torchwood fans.
