The Beautiful Photographs Make this Book a Joy5
Paperweights were originally made for what their name suggests, holding down paper. In a society where the letter was the normal means of communication and almost all well to do households had either a desk or bureau containing the requisite writing implements, including, more than likely a paperweight of some form or other.

Originally they were quite cheaply made but soon the factories began to try to outdo one another and realised the potential of the Victorian era, when people loved bright and colorful things. The weights became more and more complex with the millefiori designs (Italian for thousands of flowers) being perhaps the most complex and some of the weights starting to have faceted sides, lampwork etc. anything that made them different from their competitors.

As the title suggest the book only deals with English paperweights, so if your collecting field is the Scottish factories, Perthshire, Strathearn, Selkirk etc. Or the French factories, Baccarat, Clichy or St. Louis then you will be disappointed because their weights are not in this book. However if you have a love of glass paperweights in general , then you are in for a treat, because within the pages are some of the most beautiful weights ever made.

The book is full colour and features some beautiful weights from Bacchus, of Birmingham, Whitefriars glass of London and many more including some from unknown makers. It also shows a good selection of `dumps' from the John Kilner factory in Wakefield. Dumps for those who are unfamiliar with the term are the large pieces of green bottle glass that were more likely made as door stops rather than paperweights. They are quite crudely made, but have their own charm and can bring quite high prices these days.

All in all a wonderful book to browse through in front of the fire on a cold rainy evening. Or any other time for that matter.
