Product Description

Foundations of Art + Design, in its new and updated edition, guides artists and designers through the fundamentals of their fields and provides insights into putting these principles into practice. Part 1 covers the elements that can fill a blank page - points and lines, shapes, textures and colours - to create a sense of space, time and motion. Part 2 reveals how to develop unity and harmony, balance, scale and proportion, contrast and emphasis and rhythm to achieve a successful whole. Comprehensive yet accessible, with a wide range of illustrations drawn from all areas of art and design, this is an ideal book for students embarking on course in graphic design, fine art and illustration as well as allied courses in interior design, fashion design, textile design, industrial design, product design and printmaking.

Customer Reviews

Best for students looking for art & design theory/background!4
This is not a 'how to' book incase you were looking for a practical guide that teaches you art & design. Instead, it's an academic text which looks at art & design from more of a historical, contextual perspective and explains what art is and why it is the way it is. The book covers many areas like texture, form, colour and scale and these are all discussed from a theorectical perspective with plenty of examples of artwork (fine art to modern) to illusrate the various themes and theories.

This is an OK book and I think an academic book of this sort is something any student would benefit from having on their shelf, but as I said, it's not a practical book and really doesn't set out to inspire (which is what I was really looking for) - something I will dip into every now and again for a little browse.
