Superb
Replaced my old sonicare with this one which is effectively 2 toothbrushes for the price of one and am delighted with it. The features are excellent: it's great to have an indicator that lets you know exactly how much battery life is left and the various cleaning programmes are easy to use and a real bonus. Lovely clean teeth from an excellent product.
Nice Hampsteads :o)
Having heard only good things about the Sonicare range I ordered this set a few weeks ago. First impressions were good, the unit looked smart and well designed, certainly a bit classier than my faithful Oral-B. Build quality is excellent and the charger/plinth looks the part too. Two different colours should hopefully stop bathroom battles. The only slight (aesthetic) let down is the small gap between head and main body. The instruction booklet is very detailed and gives "sound" (geddit?) advice on teeth cleaning.
Brushing is an enjoyable and thorough affair, ticklish at first and I did notice a slight gum bleed on the first couple of uses, but all was ok after a couple of days once the edge had been taken off the new brush-head. Little effort is required for those with weak wrists or just plain lazy as you hold the brush still rather than brush up and down. The angle of the head is just right for reaching inside those back teeth and the timer is a good idea to stop you over or under-doing it. One mini toothbrush head is also supplied for more precision cleaning - you'll have to share that one. Top tip - press the on button when the toothbrush is right in your mouth or your toothpaste will end up on your mirror, wall, and feet - anywhere but where it's supposed to! The battery lasts for about 10 days on a full charge but no doubt this will decrease with age. The booklet says you can leave it on the double plinth/charger all the time but being a bit paranoid, I prefer not to. Smart travel cases (hard and soft) complete the quality ensemble.
I think that under a hundred pounds for the pair is good value but don't forget to take into account the cost of replacement brush heads which are currently £15.99 for three. The booklet says they will need replacing every three months. I think that is a bit optimistic but maybe I'm just a bit heavy handed.
All in all, I'm really pleased with this toothbrush. My teeth feel dentist-clean after use and definitely look better :o)
Sonicare: Getting Better...
Having previously owned a first generation Sonicare - the `Advance' (which my dentist told me to stop using immediately given its quite awful design and inferior cleaning ability) and currently using a Sonicare Elite as part of my cleaning regime, I can confidently say that the Sonicare FlexCare as a toothbrush alone is a vast improvement on both. It is still far from perfect and here are the good points followed by the bad points:
- A much slender handle with an easier grip.
- Longer brush head stem.
- Traditional style brush head.
- Multiple settings and speeds which make for a better (and less extreme) cleaning `experience'.
- It holds the charge for longer.
- The sheer force of the vibration still makes it difficult to clean the back of teeth effectively.
- The charger is less robust than on previous models.
- It takes many, many hours to get a full charge.
- This particular set seems to have an `identity crisis' (i.e. two brushes but only one of each travelling case, one small toothbrush head and one charger).
- The vast majority of dentists still recommend Oral-B toothbrushes.
I still use an Oral-B electric toothbrush daily - I find its circular motion much more effective at cleaning teeth (especially the back of teeth) and the only reason I have a Sonicare toothbrush is solely for when using Corsodyl mouthwash. When using it with a small mouthful of Corsodyl its sheer power ensures that the mouthwash really gets into the gums and between the teeth.
In summary, this is not a bad product at all, but given the RRP (at the time of writing this review) of £250 I think it will appeal to `must have' people - it's almost a lifestyle accessory. In my opinion and that of most dentists a £15 Oral-B electric toothbrush will clean your teeth more effectively.
Oh, and finally, can Philips please print the model number on the toothbrush? Once you throw away the packaging and lose the instructions there is no way of determining which type of Sonicare you have when it comes to buying new brush heads.
