What's new and improved?

Stronger Security and Data Protection
The best way to protect against the damage of viruses is to prevent its installation. Symantec extends its best of breed antivirus removal technology to handle the latest spyware and adware threats and handle the unique side effects of these threats (i.e., registry, processes, files, changes to LSPs) in real time. Norton AntiVirus blocks Home/ hijacking spyware before the user's web page can be redirected.

Adaptive Personalised Protection
The new Norton Protection Center is a common destination point that automatically/dynamically tailors itself to an individual user's preferences, behavior and environment to provide a personalized view of their computer protection status.

The new Norton Risk Assessment Model automatically removes dangerous programs without decisions required by the end user, but for those programs that may be tied to legitimate applications, Norton AntiVirus will guide the user though the steps required to safely protect desired applications from the dangerous programs.

Key Features & Benefits:

Removes Viruses, Worms, and Trojan Horses Automatically
Detects and removes viruses, worms and Trojan horses automatically, without interrupting users' work.

Provides Automatic Worm Blocking
Automatically detects and blocks worms in outgoing email messages, stopping them from sending themselves out to others.

Protects Instant Messages
Scans incoming attachments from Instant Messaging services such as MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger, AOL Messenger or Yahoo Messenger for viruses and removes infections automatically.

Spyware and Other Security Risks Detection
Expands Norton AntiVirus' protection beyond viruses, worms and Trojans to include detection of certain types of non-virus threats such as spyware, adware and keystroke loggers which can be used maliciously to:

  • Compromise the security of a system.
  • Spy on users' private data.
  • Track users' online behavior.

    Proactive Protection with QuickScan
Users have an additional scanner called QuickScan that will scan the system upon receipt of the latest virus definitions and automatically remove those threats with improved removal capabilities.

    Email Scanning
Scans and Cleans Both Incoming and Outgoing Email. Detects viruses lurking in email attachments before users' even save or launch the attachment, to avoid the risk of unknowingly forwarding viruses to others.

Continues to protect mail clients that use standard POP3 mail protocol, and it automatically configures email protection for commonly used clients such as:

  • Microsoft Outlook Express 4.0/5.X
  • Microsoft Outlook 97/98/2000/XP
  • Netscape Messenger 4.X, Netscape Mail 6.0
  • Eudora Light 3.0, Eudora Pro 4.0, Eudora 5.0

    Up-to-Date Protection
Notifies users when their virus definition files are out-of-date and guides them to renew their subscription to receive protection updates if their subscription has expired.

    Compressed File Archive Support
Provides real-time scanning of compressed file archives, which users download from the internet (including Instant Messenger and Peer-to-Peer networks) and detects virus infections even before users open the files.

    Powerful Detection and Repair Options
Quarantine function allows users to redirect an infected file to a safe area on their system. Within Quarantine, users can initiate the Scan and Deliver feature to submit the file to the Symantec Security Response experts for analysis.

Scan and Deliver lets users submit a file with a suspected or unrepairable virus quickly and easily to Symantec Security Response team. If Symantec Security Response experts determine that the file contains a new, unknown virus, a Symantec Security Response engineer creates a new virus definition and sends it to the user.

Malicious Code Detection protects users' system against malicious ActiveX code and Java applets, as well as Trojan Horses.

Uses Bloodhound heuristic technology, which detects virus-like behaviour, to identify and repair unknown viruses.

    LiveUpdate
Downloads virus and spyware definition (i.e., protection) updates automatically when users connect to the internet. Protection updates are essential in keeping computers protected against new virus threats and other security risks. If users' don't connect to the internet frequently, Norton AntiVirus prompts them to run LiveUpdate when their virus definitions are dangerously out-of-date.** **Twelve months of virus definition service updates included with purchase of Norton AntiVirus 2006; annual subscriptions available online for subsequent updates.

    Symantec Automated Support Assistant
Allows users to efficiently help themselves via direct links from error dialogs and key features (e.g. LiveUpdate) to an online troubleshooting system with relevant support information.

Symantec offers users free online technical support options that automatically determine which products and versions are on a customer's machine and whether the user has the most up-to-date product patches. Using this information, the assistant attempts to diagnose the issue and provide customized solutions, eliminating the need to search through the online support knowledge base.

Doesn't cut it when it needs to1
My PC came with Norton Antivirus and I renewed it to 2005. I carried out live updates and scanned regularly. All seemed very nice until last week when everything got corrupted and I couldn't log on. The screen is covered with white pixelated tartan.
When I ran the recovery disk Norton had been disabled. When I reloaded it discovered 59 infected files, but the screen is still bad. My brother suffered the same fate and fixed the screen by running the antivirus system his internet provider supplies. Very unimpressed with Norton. I also suspect from the wording of some 5 star reviews that the company is trying to plant favourable reviews to keep their star rating up.

    A Word Of Warning1
Until now I have been a fan of Norton products and used them successfully for many years. However I recently downloaded and installed Antivirus 2006. (This because for some reason best know to Symantec they would not accept my payment for renewal of my then current AV version but would accept payment for an upgrade to v2006!)
At this point my troubles started with Microsoft Office and in particular with Access 2003. Every time I opened an Access MDB file it became corrupted and unuseable. The Data Source Dialog for ODBC linking disappeared. I also experienced problems with Word 2003 that reported it had not loaded properly.
My solution was to remove Antivirus 2006. All my problems are resolved and everything is back to nomal including the reappearance of the ODBC Data Source Dialog.
I could understand this more if I was running a non standard system. I am not; I operate a standard Window XP Professional system with two defined domains.
I offer this review as a warning to those considering Antivirus 2006.

This is a seriously bad product!1
I downloaded and installed this online when my subscription for the 2001 edition came up for renewal. It was a nightmare to download taking an absolute age and the installation is not much better. Now my computer has slowed to a snails pace where I had no real problem with the earlier version. Now I look on the Amazon USA site and surprise, surprise this has horrendous reviews citing the same problem. Uninstalling is reported to be equally aggravating. So much to look forward to! This is bloatware. Avoid!
