"Though I fly through the Valley of Death, I shall fear no evil. For I am at 80,000-feet and climbing." - SR-71 USAF base (Kadena, Japan)
The setting is 2012. As the era of the nation-state draws quickly to a close, the rules of warfare evolve even more rapidly. More and more nations become increasingly dependent on Private Military Companies (PMCs) - elite mercenaries with a lax view of the law. The Reykjavik Accords further legitimise their existence by authorising their right to serve in every aspect of military operations. There goes the neighbourhood...
Tom Clancy's HAWX is the next-gen console game primed to revolutionise the way we think about combat in the sky. Cutting-edge technology, devastating firepower, and intense dogfights award this new title a deserving place in the prestigious Tom Clancy Franchise.
- Enhanced Reality System (E.R.S): E.R.S. is in-game technology that helps turn novice aviators into elite pilots of the future. The Enhanced Reality System is the backbone of your flight experience: radars and incoming missile detection, damage control system, tactical map and information relay, and weapons trajectory control. E.R.S. also allows you to issue orders to your squadron, making this system as iconic to Tom Clancy's HAWX as the Cross-Com system is to Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter!
- Dual Gameplay: Want to ease into your flight missions and gain a level of comfort? Turn on the assistance mode and take full advantage of your E.R.S. Need to evade your enemy and execute advanced dog-fighting moves? Switch off the assistance mode and feel the adrenalin rushing through your veins as you play in stunning 3rd person views.
- Innovation in Multiplayer: For the first time ever in the Air Combat genre, experience the entire solo campaign in four-player 'jump in' coop mode. In PVP mode, challenge your friends in intense dog-fighting sessions

Manufacturer's Description
You've often relied on them in other Tom Clancy games, but for the first time you get to play as an advanced fighter pilot in the most exciting combat flight sim of this generation. Taking the role of a U.S. pilot the game's plot contains elements from both Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 and EndWar as you end up defending the United States from corporate mercenaries.
You start the game as a mercenary yourself, fighting in the Middle East |
Although it features plenty of realistically modelled aircraft and other military vehicles this is an accessible, fast paced arcade action game - not a stuffy simulator. You'll engage dozen of bogeys at a time and never have to worry about running out of missiles, let alone targets.
The unique Enhanced Reality System (ERS) allows you to customise the difficultly level however you want, with a set of pilot assists that let you give control of things like radar, damage control and anti-stall measures to the computer. Or you can simply take control of everything yourself and prove yourself the real top gun.
Key Features- Xrossover: The first flight sim to be set in the Tom Clancy universe, where you actually provide fire support for one of the missions from Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2.
- Autopilot: Enhanced Reality System handles everything from damage control and incoming missiles to crash prevention and squad commands, so you can get on with the piloting.
- Wingman: Four player co-operative mode lets you create your own virtual squadron of friendly pilots as you collaborate and compete online.
- World tour: Stunning graphics simulate over 12,000 square kilometres of realistically modelled land - from Chicago and New England in the U.S., to Rio, Chile and the Middle East.
- Plane choice: Over 60 licensed aircraft from the F-22 Raptor and Eurofighter to Russian fighters and experimental prototypes - all with fully customisable weapon payloads.
Based in Bucharest, this was the first Ubisoft studio to be established outside of France. It specialises in simulations such as submarine series Silent Hunter and flight sims Blazing Angels and Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. The company also distributes other publisher's products within Romania.
Customer Reviews
Best flight sim yet!
I love this game! I've finished playing the game on 'Normal' and am getting ready to plunge in at 'Hard'.
I have tried my hand at every Tom Clancy game on the XBox360 to date and this is my favourite. As an aside, I really did want to like Tom Clancy's Endwar but just found some aspects of battlefield control counter-intuitive. Although, I am hoping there will be a sequel with improvements; there is no denying how innovative that game is.
Back to H.A.W.X.. The missions are varied and exciting; better and more realistic than those I came across in Ace Combat 6. The controls are intuitive, Wingman control is prompt, and the view from above exciting.
My favourite feature in the game is the ERS, which you activate in order to intercept enemies or reach a target. The only gripe I have is that learning to fly in 'Assistance Off' mode (which provides an excellent view of the aircraft in action) requires a great deal of practice since you cannot adjust the camera angle.
Other than that I would like to take this opportunity to plead with game designers/manufacturers to please re-introduce (since it appears to be being phased out) offline multiplayer split-screen gaming. Some of us players still like to compete with our mates when they come over for a game.
Over Rated
While I understand flight sim games are rare, this one cant even compete with Ace Combat 6 which was released long time ago.
I will keep this review short and straight into the points...
Positives:
1) the variety of missions.
2) wide selection of airplanes to choose from.
3) multiplayer
4) ranking system.
Negatives:
1) The game is so easy, even when played on elite level its still very easy.
2) ERS feature is so silly and newbiesh. should have been left as an option for biggeners but not as a mean for playing the game.
3) the display is FULL of 'banners'. some times it feels like visiting a scam website! On the left top corner we have the enemy image, which is understandable, on the top right there is friendly characters image display (which is pointless and just filling the screen), on bottom left there is the radar, and bottom right is weapons box. this is cramping the display. there is not even an option to turn these off. well, yeah we can turn the whole hud off! but thats inconvenient (who wants to fly without HUD!?)
4) talking about HUD, its not visible when you're inside the cokpit, how can I know what is my angle of decent and whethere i'm up or down?
5) and that brings me to te interior of the planes, while its really really nice to see the plane from the inside.. couldn't they have the radar and selected weapons shown on the plain interior display itself?! I've got EF2000 game which i purchased some 14 years ago and it had interactive interior with all the radars and weapon display functioning.
6) can't land, can't take off, can't refuel on air, can't rearm.
7) the controls are silly, for example airplane stalls only when playing in third person view but doesn't stall when you're in the cokpit!
8) when using ERS which is supposed to show you the path to fly in, it actually affects the control of ur plane (for example if the ERS is shown that you do a right turn and you decide to do a left it will hesitate! )
Looking forward to HAWX 2
Flight sims are rare, good flight sims are rarer, and a good flight sim for a console is a once in a decade event.
The game requires skill, and perhaps a bit of luck, making it overly enjoyable to those who like a challenge. The AI powering the planes is realistic.
Also, the game (like other Tom Clancy games) features speech recognition, making life ALOT easier when your in a tight dogfight.
Story-wise, it's quite good; not only does it have a fairly engrossing story, but it ties in with the other games quite well. The voice actors are to be commmended as well, for really getting into character.
But, there are bad parts:
1. Voice recognition commands can sometimes be misunderstood because the designers didnt really think about how some of them sound similar (and thus misunderstand you)
2. Physics: The game's physics system makes all planes 'ghosts'. You can fly through another plane. I feel this detracts from tight dogfights, as I don't have to worry about ramming into someone else.
3. The terrain: The game's environment is actually satellite imagery, whilst this makes a good environment to fight in it's horrible when you look at it, the imagery is something you'd expect from a first-generation 3D PC game, not from a modern game. Colours are blotchy and details are left out. There are only about four diffrent building types as well, making towns and cities very dull to look at.
4. The characters: Again, it's what you'd expect to see in a 10 year old game, people talking without lip sync. It's annoying and frankly, shouldnt of been done.
Overall; quite good with some bad points, I eagerly await HAWX 2.
