Editorial Reviews

fRoots, December 2002
The press release for Mariama claimed that the singing/guitar-playing duo of Papa Amadou Fall and Cheikhou Coulibaly are as infuenced by Cat Stevens and Joan Armatrading as they are by the music of their native Senegal. Still, I slapped the thing on regardless and found myself pleasantly surprised.

There are Western influences at play here (the music manages to be folky and funky often at the same time), but the raw, soulful vocals and heartbeat of percussion are Senegalese through and through. They go for big choruses and wah-wah guitar, but everything has that sparse understated quality that is becoming a hallmark of Real World productions.

The title track is the real killer, here powered along with wailing vocals plus accordion, courtesy of James McNally. The acoustic "Jello" gives Pape room to deliver some satisfyingly rasping vocals and "Yaay" has Oumar Sow's funky guitar running all the way through it. Oh, and I couldn't detect the influence of 1970s easy-listening singer-songwriters anywhere (so much for press releases). --Jamie Renton
