A great disappointment for me
I was really looking forward to this one because it includes one of my favourite house tunes: "Who keeps changin' your mind" by South Street Player.
Sadly the anouncement on the cover sticker "2XCD Full 12" Versions" is not true. The track fades out after 3.50 minutes although the full 12 "Sure is Pure Mix" is about 8 minutes long . A great disappointment for me!!!
This is more like it!
"Urgh," I thought, "another retread through house music from the late 80s/early 90s." I've never been a fan of Hed Kandi's "Back To Love" releases - however I always admired Mark Doyle's unique approach at this particular series; it felt like he loved this series most of all the Hed Kandi genres (he did run his own night called Back To Love in London many years ago) and there was at times some amount of work to get certain tracks on previous releases. However things have changed and this, the first Back To Love release that isn't compiled my Mark Doyle - is strangely a turn for the better. Not only are we presented with Hed Kandi's [garish] new artwork but the format for Back To Love has changed... no more one cd of house and one cd of hip-hop; now we're dealt two cd's of house back to back but best of all, this is house from the era of 1992-1996. Perhaps I'm biased - at 26, these are the "classics" I remember more than those of the earlier Back To Love releases, the "nostalgic" feeling described by other Back To Love admirers hits me more on this release than any other. The music: CD2 is definately the strongest of the two with excellent house cuts like "Break of Dawn" by Rhythm on the Loose, the original "Anthem" by N-Joi and "Give Me Love" by Alcatraz. I've been disappointed by Hed Kandi's releases of late, particularly the last mix album which was awful - but this is a [temporary] return to form. Next up is the 2006 release for Disco Kandi and another [very twisted] Stereo Sushi (Sashimi); one can only hope that as much effort is put into them as this album.
Back To 3 Stars
The previous release in the Back To Love series was a closing of the chapter from '89-'91 and it was an amazing finish to that era and so I was excited to see what 92-96 classics featured on the next instalment. I was neither blown away or horrified by this selection for the simple reason that the album is predictable and safe.
On disc one you have the beautiful vocals of Barbara Tucker with 'Beautiful People'. From there, there are sure-fire classics from Kim English, De'Lacy, Lovetribe, Bucketheads and Basement Jaxx.
Disc two includes some of my personal classics from Njoi, My Friend Sam and after months of trying to find 'Perfect Motion' in it's entirity it ends up on this collection, which I have to take my hat off to HK for. To my surprise 'Who Keeps Changing Your Mind?' was FADED OUT after only 4 mins!!! That raised my eyebrows, especially after it said full 12" mixes on the front cover. Rounding off the album are some great end of the night belters from X-Press 2, Alcatraz and Grace.
I've been ever increasingly worried about the quality of the compilations coming out of HK towers of late. Both the Mix 2006 and this release have been slightly uninspired and it seems the Fierce Angels crew are giving them a run for their money, both in quality of the packaging and music. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top!
