Product Description

In peaceful southern Sweden, Louise Akerblom, an estate agent, pillar of the Methodist church, wife and mother, disappears. There is no explanation and no motive. Inspector Kurt Wallander and his team are called in to investigate. As Inspector Wallander is introduced to this missing persons case, he has a gut feeling that the victim will never be found alive, but he has no idea how far he will have to go in search of the killer. In South Africa, meanwhile Nelson Mandela has made his long walk to freedom. Wallander find himself caught up in a conspiracy involving renegade members of the South African secret service and a former KGB agent, all of them set upon halting Mandela's rise to power. Faced with a world in which terrorism knows no frontiers, Wallander must prevent a hideous crime that means to dam the tide of history.

Customer Reviews

Back to his best!5
After being disappointed by the second Kurt Wallander outing (The Dogs of Riga) this is a welcome return to the form that was demonstrated in the first book (Faceless Killers).

The book begins with the investigation into the disappearance and murder of a local estate agent. As Wallander and collegues trawl through the evidence for the case there appears to be more behind the murder of the estate agent that was first thought.

The book then sets out on a thriller that where two stories spanning two continents are intertwined, resulting in a truly gripping ending.

If, like me, you were impressed with Faceless Killers, but disappointed by The Dogs of Riga, this is a welcome return to form. Highly recommended.

Another masterpiece by Mankell4
Another masterpiece by Mankell. Thoroughly enjoyed this episode of Wallanders' police investigation, and look forward to the next one. Great writing-I am a massive Wallander fan!

Disappointing1
Most disappointing. I'm getting through the Wallander books and enjoyed them all until this one. The White Lionness starts off in typical fashion and we see the Inspector getting into his stride in good style but it then gets bogged down about half way through. The baddies start to get out of situations only through the incompetence of the police and other authorities, which is ok on one or at most two occasions but it happens a lot and I'm left thinking I'm wasting my time having to accept the author's lack of ideas. This is definitely the worse one of a great series.
