Having suffered form the cloying effects of Jacobitism and Victorian nostalgia 17th C Scottish history is well served by this illuminating book which opens up the crucible of modern Scottish democratic thinking.

Unfettered by nonsense this book is a literal bible for the military actions between 1638 and 1690 and is required reading for those seeking to understand the complex politics of this period and Scottish relations within the three kingdoms at this time.

Colosus figures in danger of undeserved obscurity are saved for posterity while less deserving though popularist characters such as Montrose are conveyed in the more chilling light in which they were viewed contemporarily.

Refreshing.
