Customer Reviews
For Christopher Lee fans only!
If you're fond of Christopher Lee films generally; you'll probably enjoy this TV film too. As a Holmes story, I found the script lacking the genius/ingenuity of dialogue to be found in Conan-Doyle's original stories, they too albeit have been considerably adapted, for the screen. Some of the lines in this one are really B-Movie material.
In this film from 1991, Mr Lee is noticeably an old boy (Godh bless him),presumably the script was adapted for Lee, for; Holmes's lines frequently refer to him not being up to it anymore; In the beginning of this outing; Sherlock, makes it known that he intends retiring to Surrey, so that he can take up bee-keeping!
Holmes is enlisted by his brother Mycroft , to get embroiled in some nonsense; to ensure the safekeeping of a priceless diamond, the usual murders and the whodunnit scenario unfold along the way, nearly three hours of it! Dr Watson, is played by Patrick MacNee, (a long way from his days as 'Steed' in the 'The Avengers').
I suppose this film classifies as what is fashionably called a 'guilty pleasure'. I am culpable of enjoying this one, and it really isn't a good film: though Lee, is as splendid as usual; and he gets more screen time in this one ; than in nearly anything else I have seen him in.
My DVD has Dutch subtitles, which I didn't have the option of switching off, but it didn't bother me too much,
A poorly produced, overrated movie.
My wife and I were disappointed with this movie. It certainly did not live up to the quality of characters being portrayed or give credit to the actors portraying them. We were left wondering if this was a serious attempt to portray Holmes as a brilliant detective or a schoolboy's amateurish attempt to portray him in a glorified, movie-style setting. Holmes is portrayed at the outset as an old man about to retire, considering himself 'passed it' with regard to solving crime. This portrayal seeps through the whole 3-hour story (I can't call it drama) with Holmes repeatedly saying he knew who the murderer was but being shown that he really didn't have a clue. Events overtook him time after time. The producers tried to spice up the movie with one or two love scenes with secondary characters but this only highlighted the fact that the story was really a 3-hour misery. A true Sherlock Holmes' fan would be very disappointed.
The Game's Afoot in this Holmes Thriller
Those familiar with the Jeremy Brett series will not be disappointed with Christopher Lee as Sherlock Holmes. Some devotees will try to make comparisons, but should sit back and enjoy the action in one of the best Holmes adventures available on the screen. This is a truly remarkable adventure with Holmes and Watson on holiday in Africa. Ride on the Orient Express as Holmes meets with former president Teddy Roosevelt, wireless genius Marconi, and a host of suspects, as they journey to Victoria Falls, through the African bush, and into a secret Indian catacomb. The scenery is spectacular and Sherlock Holmes fans will not be disappointed.
