The year 2006 marks the 40th anniversary of the release of "My Brother Makes The Noises For the Talkies , the first record by The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. On January 28th 2006 Classic Rock Productions Ltd presented a very special evening celebrating the music and achievements of the legendary Bonzos. The part of the late great and sorely missed Vivian Stanshall was performed variously by Messrs Stephen Fry, Adrian Edmondson, Phill Jupitus and Paul Merton, making this the most exciting evening since the Secret Policeman s Ball. For the first time since the group broke up in the early seventies a British stage once again resounded to the inspired flights of lunacy of the Bonzos favourites performed live. An evening dedicated to the surreal stage presentation of the highlights of the music of the Bonzos, including all of the hits, which have built a lasting musical legacy. Track List: Rule Britannia, My Brother Makes The Noises For The Talkies, Little Sir Echo, Hello Mabel, Falling In Love Again, Watermelon, Jollity Farm, Music From The Leg, By A Waterfall, Sheik of Araby, The Equestrian Statue, We Are Normal, The Strain, The Sound Of Music, Exodus, The Trouser Press, My Pink Half Of The Drainpipe, I m Bored, Sport (The Odd Boy), Mr Apollo, Look At Me, I m Wonderful, San Francisco, Rhinocratic Oaths, Mr Slater s Parrot, Monster Mash, Urban Spaceman, Canyons Of Your Mind, The Intro and Outro, Slush.

The Bonzo Dog's bo**ocks
I have adored the Bonzo's since I bought Gorilla when it first came out and I have heard just about everything they did after that. I didn't know quite what to expect when I ordered this DVD but I thought what the hell, it's under a tenner and some of it might be good. Well let me tell you that all of it is very very good and I recommend it to anyone who has heard any of their original studio albums which are all represented here. It's a great sadness that Viv couldn't be there but I doubt if he would have been in a fit state to be there even if he were still alive. However, Ade Edmondson, Phil Jupitus, Paul Merton & Stephen Fry all present passable performances in his absence as do the other members of the band. This concert wasn't just about Stanshall though and I was fascinated to learn which members of the band made the various sounds I had listened to on their albums over and over again for the last 30 odd years. I just cannot get enough of them and my only regret is that I never got to see them at the height of their popularity and that there isn't much film of them available on DVD.
great quality performance, superb surround sound DVD
The Bonzo 40th anniversary show DVD arrived today - and I am very impressed. It's a damned fine performance all round, and with excellent camerawork to compliment the superb and dynamic audio which is in Dolby stereo and true Dolby Digital & DTS 5.1 surround. Sensibly the centre speaker gently fills the stereo image - much as with Morrissey's "Who Put The M In Manchester?" - another great surround sound live DVD.
Neil clearly made every effort to be sure that this occasion would be recorded with due attention to detail and using state of the art equipment. The DVD notes point out that 'This film is definitely NOT associated with EMI." Even the incidental music has been recorded anew. This DVD sets a quality standard to which EMI should aspire.
Stephen Fry has a jolly time doing a few key numbers in his stylish and lyrical spoken word - including Rhinocratic Oaths, Sport and The Sound of Music. Adrian Edmondson is simply spectacular in "The Strain" - Viv Stanshall has been done proud.
The original Bonzo band members all present with gusto, inventiveness and lots of ARC (Chick Corea's "Affinity, Reality and Communication" concept of band interaction and cohesion).
Possibly insane, but never inane - this is showbusiness and stagecraft of the highest calibre. Any semi-inclined Bonzo Dog Band fancier must own this fine and historic DVD.
Complete insanity!
If you were one of the lucky fans in the Astoria that night, buy this DVD - it's everything you remember (and some bits you probably don't...).
If you weren't there, buy this DVD anyway! The Bonzo's whacky blend of music, humour, surrealism and downright weirdness should appeal to anyone who likes British humour of the Python variety. The addition of modern stars Stephen Fry, Paul Merton, Ade Edmonson & Phil Jupitus, all of whom clearly adored being on stage with some of the people who inspired their comedy, adds a splendid icing to this already magnificent cake.
A fabulous night, brilliantly captured. Thanks guys!
