Customer Reviews

Complete history ? Hardly ..3
I am a massive fan of the Bonzos, I was totally gutted to be in Australia and thus not able to see them live for their 40th Anniversary tour.
So the live DVD of one of their reunion concerts was the next best thing.
Of the 3 DVDs in this set, the live concert is by far the best. A treat to hear and see them play their best loved songs.
I was keen to see the other 2 discs as well though, hoping for some old footage of the band and some facts I didn't know.
Now there are 3 possible reasons that explain why the 2 documentary discs are so disappointing 1) there is actually very little footage that remains (or ever existed) of the Bonzos. 2) Whoever put this set together ran into a *lot* of copyright problems and were unable to get much footage to use 3) Whoever put this set together just wasn't very good at editing. I constantly found myself getting irritated as they cut away from a song to someone talking, cutting back to the song (putting up more copyright information) and so on. No one clip was allowed to run all the way through. There were some added as extras but not many. Huge amounts of repetition - on the same disc as well as across discs 1 and 3.
And please, a Gallery that consist of about 6 pictures is very very lame.
This package could have been so much better, and just felt very incomplete to me.

A New Bonzo Fan5
Bonzo Dog "The Complete Nutter History Of The Bonzos."

I am a relatively new fan to the Bonzo Band so anything I can find by them is interesting to me, so when I heard this 3 DVD set came out I brought it.

Disc 01 (Total running time including extras 90mins.)

Main Feature: Running Time 73mins.

This is the history of the band, from how they formed in art school to playing there first gigs, to how they got there sound, how they nearly became the New Vaudeville Band and through there albums till there eventual break up. There are interviews with all the main Bonzo men; there is even some old archive footage form 1974 of Viv Stanshall being interviewed. There is also some segments of them rehearsing for there 40th anniversary show, a sort of behind the scene's type of thing, includes the guests vocalists performing with them.

Extra Segment: Running Time 17mins.

Press call for the 40th Anniversary Tour. This is basically a busked song set, Phil Jupitus joins in for a busked version of Canyons, a brief segment of Watermelon and Jolity Farm is also played. All the Bonzo men are there.

I give this disc 5 out of 5, its great, very informative and interesting.

Disc 02: (Total Running Time including extras 84mins.)

Main feature: Running Time 60mins.

This is the live concert that BBC 4 showed early in 2006.

NOTE: This is a shortened version of the live DVD already available.

Bonus Feature: Running Time 24mins.

This is songs not included on either the live full length DVD or the shortened broadcast one. These include, Hunting Tigers, Monster Coming, Tent, Humanoid Boogie and Can Blue Men Sing the Whites.

I give this DVD 3 out of 5 for the bonus live songs alone.

Disc 03: (Total Running Time including extra 128mins.)

Note: This is the same stuff available on the Book and 2 DVD set called the "Inside The Bonzo Dog Band." There is no book with the 3 DVD set.

Main Feature: Running Time 65 mins.

This is a sort of album by album review of there output, they stop at the occasional track, "Urban Spaceman," and a little segment on Mr Vivian Stanshall.

Bonus Feature: Running Time 63 Mins.

There are several segments on this,

The New Faces Performance (3 Songs)

Urban Spaceman (Promotional Video)

Vivian Stanshall (Post Bonzo Review)

Neil Innes (Post Bonzo Review)

Original Songs on 78's. (This is a selection of songs the Bonzos covered by the original artists on 78's disc. This is set to old archive film of the 20's and 30's.)

I give this disc 1 out of 5 as it already available in another form, but if you don't have the book and 2 DVD set then I would give it 5 out of 5.

All in all this is a great DVD over 5 hours worth of Bonzo's fun, if you are a new fan to the band, by this and enjoy. Older fans may already know most of the stuff here but would still enjoy it.
