	Colossal Youth by Young Marble Giants Buy used from: £12.35 Guitar, bass, drum machine, voice and cheap keyboard - that's it! Simple and brilliant songs.
	Gladsome humour & blue (1988, & Daintees) [VINYL] by Martin Stephenson Buy used from: £6.00 It was a toss up between this and "Boat to Bolivia" - this wins courtesy of the fantastic opener "Wholly Humble Heart". This guys one of the greatest live performers the UK ever produced. Check him!
	Rei Momo by David Byrne Buy new: £6.78 / Used from: £3.34 My personal hero - so underrated - the latin instrumentation on this one is applied perfectly. All his albums are worth investigation but this'll move yer bum!
	Squeezing Out Sparks by Graham Parker & the Rumour Buy used from: £5.79 Heartfelt songwriting great guitar-driven stuff - "You Can't Be Too Strong" will carve a niche in your heart.
	Emperor Tomato Ketchup by Stereolab Buy used from: £3.92 How technology should be used! Amazingly catchy songs - hypnotic. The logical progression from Young Marble Giants?
	O.K Computer by Radiohead Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.90 Yes - a lot of people will list "The Bends" to be cool, but this is without question Radiohead's creative peak.
	Just like The Fambly Cat by Grandaddy Buy new: £9.68 / Used from: £2.56 If you haven't got to these guys yet, do it now! - they've packed in 'cos we didn't buy their stuff. Melodic, arty, beautiful. Different.
	Tenement Steps by The Motors Buy new: £10.98 / Used from: £6.50 Gets it's place on the strength of "Love and Loneliness" alone - a classic rock song.
	Mind Bomb by TheThe Buy used from: £1.24 Superb production, Sinead guests spectacularly, and "Armageddon Days" nails the Middle East politics/religion issue in a 3 minute pop song - written in 1994 and more relevant than ever!
	Reelin' And Rockin' - The Very Best Of by Chuck Berry Buy new: £7.98 Forget Elvis (P) - this is The Man. If you are at all interested in popular music you must own some Chuck.
	The Best of Louis Jordan by Louis Jordan Buy new: £10.79 / Used from: £4.49 ...and forget Bill Haley - this is The Other Man. The Jordan with a lot more than two big hits.
	Low-life by New Order Buy new: £5.38 / Used from: £1.94 Alongside "Power Corruption and Lies" this is superb New Order, without a bad note on the entire album. Before they were making World Cup songs.
	Takk... by Sigur Rós Buy used from: £2.93 This is one of the most statuesquely beautiful albums of recent times. I cried real tears.
	Funeral by Arcade Fire Buy new: £8.88 / Used from: £4.98 Genius songwriting. Becomes a favourite very quickly and stays forever.
	Loaded by The Velvet Underground Buy new: £5.68 / Used from: £3.33 My favourite original Velvets studio album. Also try the "Live at Max's Kansas City" bootlegged recording - crap sound but just drips with atmosphere - you can actually smell the weed.
	Blood and Rain (The Singles '86-96') by The Silencers Buy new: £12.19 Good collection of this earthy but melodic band's output, if you like it (you will) then find "Dance to the Holyman" on CD and explore deeper.
	Drums and Wires by XTC Buy new: £9.08 / Used from: £6.29 There's loads of great stuff in XTC's back catalogue - this contains some very original ideas that show up much later in work by Radiohead and Bloc Party (to name but 2!)
	16 Lovers Lane by The Go-Betweens Buy new: £28.69 / Used from: £21.95 Beautiful love songs with melodic guitar work from these Australians. A favourite for romantic but trendy liaisons.
	The Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lips Buy new: £5.38 / Used from: £2.39 Yes I know that's 21 - but I'll always have a place for the Lips' unswerving dedication to originality. They write great songs as well.
