BSL - not a guide worth buying!
I thought this book would have provided a reasonable introduction to BSL. I found it very old fashion, outdated and wouldn't recommend anyone purchasing it. Speak to your tutors first before wasting money. A very disappointing buy!!!!
A very brief explanation of British sign language
This book did not live up to my expectaions. More examples of actual signs are needed, the definitions presented were very difficult to decifer due to lack of clarity in their performance instructions. Section on BSL history was short and not particularly well written. Only for beginners.
DISAGREE with the other reviewers, so long as you get the video/DVD too.
It is very dated, in appearance not what it teaches (eg: how the signers are dressed). The signs haven't changed. But other than that it's a fine introduction to British Sign Language WHEN USED ALONG WITH THE VIDEO (also now available as a DVD from Forest Books) OF THE ORIGINAL TELEVISION SHOW. It's a stepping stone to beginning to learn and understand BSL only. IF USED IT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE VIDEO/DVD (only) then this is fab. It's pretty limited without the video, which is very entertaining (especially with comic appearances from the wonderful Jerry Hanifin!) and builds out on everything touched on in the book.
Buy this book IF you have the video too. Otherwise just get Cath Smith's 'Signs Make Sense' instead.
This book is a stepping stone to BSL level 1 but doesn't cover that course's practical material in full. It is an introduction only, to the signing & basic signs
Happy signing!
