You will not put this book down...3
Pick up this book and you will not want to put it down! Jim Eyre writes with a relaxed style as if you are sitting in a pub and hearing him telling the tale. And what a tale he has to tell!
The first 112 pages tell of his wartime service in the Royal Navy. This is not the tale of a pristine midshipman but that of an Able Seaman, who was very able to enjoy his life onshore. Any interested reader of Naval History should read his accounts of being aboard a minesweeper and later a destroyer in the Mediterranean, as they assist the allied invasion of Italy.
One hilarious tale follows another as he and his mates enjoy their shore leave. These usually ended with Jim on punishment drill yet again! These tales are liberally illustrated with Jim's highly talented ability as a cartoonist which will have you laughing out loud. The book is also illustrated with numerous photographs.
You will have to read the book to find out what happened in the dry dock, why a sheep was bought from a Greek Island, and what did Jim do on the high cliff lift in Valetta Harbour.
The second part of the book deals with the history of Jim's life of potholing and later with the Cave Rescue Organisation. There are both tragic and funny stories well illustrated with his numerous cartoons. The book ends with a chilling account of his being alone and lost in a cave in Yugoslavia with a fading light.
Another book covering the 1960's onwards is due out soon. I cant wait to get a copy.

Jim Eyre's First Caving Book of Experiences5
The book is very easy to read from a very down to earth person who writes almost as he if he is talking to the reader, warts and all! A very funny book - if you share the same sense of humour. Jim Eyre's cartoons are very well drawn and help to illustrate what he is thinking. I certainly look forward to his next book when it comes out.
