Review
Marber's credentials are as a nutritionist who has battled with his own weight, as head of The Food Doctor Clinic in Notting Hill, whose clients are referred by doctors and gastroenterologists, and as broadcasting guest and author of various Food Doctor books. His diet aims for weight loss coupled with good digestive health via lean proteins, healthy fats, fibre and some complex carbohydrates. He prescribes a meatless, light diet for seven days and then a long-term eating plan with 10 principles, such as always eating breakfast, and following his programme at least 80 per cent of the time. It's difficult for anyone else to challenge the market when Dr Atkins and similar diets have such an effective hold, but this book benefits from the enticing colour photos and nutritional sense.

Synopsis
The food doctor diet is refreshingly simple: a seven-day diet programme for a one-week kick-start to a new approach to healthy eating; 10 simple food doctor principles on the practical knowledge needed to make informed choices; an easy-to-follow eating plan for life with food comparisons, menu options and motivational tips; and specially devised recipes that apply the theory to create flavoursome, nutritious meals.

From the Author
The Food Doctor Diet has been written to help people achieve their natural weight, without extreme or potentially dangerous diets. I have found from personal experience and from working with hundreds of private clients at my clinic in London that the low calorie diets, and the high protein and fat diets are just not sustainable in the long run. You may lose weight at first, but once you return to your normal eating, the weight, and perhaps more, comes back. I have formulated The Food Doctor Diet to include all the food groups, to maximise energy levels and promote digestive and overall health. There is a kick start Seven Day Diet to help you on your way, during which I suggest you familiarise yourself with the Ten Food Doctor Principles. These have been designed to allow you to apply the principles to all situations, whether you are at work, at home or on holiday. Its easy to follow, and allows healthy, sustainable weight loss which is easy to maintain. Unlike most diets that have a beginning, middle and end, The Food Doctor Diet shows you how to incorporate the plan into your everyday life. The plan was trialled on Channel 4's Richard and Judy, and the participants all lost around 1 stone ( 5/6 kilos ) in just three weeks. I am confident that the plan will work for you just as well.

Sound, straight forward advice but it might clash with your lifestyle3
From many points the food doctor's diet is the perfect plan. It is healthy, the food is varied and it tastes nice and it does deliver results. Also it is a sane, common sense plan that can improve your relationship with food. If you tended to eat enormous quantities of food you will find it a bit hard in the beginning but if you found yourself pilling up the pounds due to careless eating habit it is great.

So why I did not gave it more than 3 stars? Because it takes effort and is not suitable for all. If you work at home or have the luxury to take snack breaks at your work every three hours it is wonderful. But for me it was impossible to sustain it, firstly because I travel a lot, I do not have a very standard schedule and somedays I do not have access to a kitchen. In this plan you have to cook your food carry it at work and store it in the fridge until there is time to take it out and reheat it. But what about some people who do not have fridges and microwaves at their workplaces and can not stop their work every 3 hours to eat? Yes, you might take on board the principles and I have copied some of the recipes that seemed nice but doing the whole plan is just impossible for me and most people that do not have a simple work routine.

Also it does involve buying a very large variety of things; if you are living with a family you can always serve them to them as well but if you are living alone you will find yourself with cupboards full with all types of food [from quinoa to bulgur wheat and red rice and corn etc] that will never finish because you are on a diet that allows you to eat quite small portions.

For the few days I found time to be at home and I followed the diet, I was throwing away food all the time. You cannot buy 2 spoonfuls of yogurt and 50 gr of spinach and 1 strip of pepper and 2 slices of cucumber. Plus, oatcakes and rice cakes do not store well once you open the package [following the food doctor's variety advice you need a month to go through a package of oatcakes]. So people who live alone [or have families that are not interested in oatcake and quinoa eating] have to throw out even as much as 75% of the expensive good quality food they buy or having an extra equipped kitchen with a massive freezer when you can put things until next month when you will need them again. Maybe a plan that is a bit less varied but addresses this problem as well is needed.

The 7 day diet is amazing!5
I did my 7th day of the diet yesterday & got on the scales this morning to find I had lost 8lbs! I knew I had lost some, but was expecting 4-5lbs at most. The first 2 days were awful, the first night I was soooo hungry, but didn't cave in, & the 2nd day just felt really weak & tired. From then on my energy levels increased, I actually started going for walks just for the walk & not because I needed to get anywhere. I have spent years doing Weight Watchers, Slimming World, Cabbage Soup etc etc, but have never had results as good as this. I'm now looking forward to the plan for life & adapting the 10 principles to my lifestyle. A must for anyone who is fed up of low calorie, low fat eating. I must admit, I threw the clear soup away on day 2 as it made me feel sick, & I did swap some of the meals to different days, but stuck as closely to what was recommended as possible. Buy it, if you stick to it you won't be disappointed.

Nearly fainted!4
I have tried many diets, but I'm a foodie and I invariably get bored and fall off the wagon. However, I almost fainted on this diet which made me stop it. In the 7 day diet it suggests one breakfast as being a cup of hot water with lemon, followed by 1 (yes, one!) scrambled egg with 1 (yes, one!!) oatcake. It just simply isn't enough food for even a small child and I felt weak and almost fainted whilst in Tesco's. I feel that this diet made me obsess about food even more (which is usually the case when you're on a diet) and when it came round to eating, the food wasn't very nice and there just simply wasn't enough. I'm pleased other people found success but it just wasn't for me.
