Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Review
'A novel as big as a nation, as quiet as thought, and moving as prayer. Matchless and towering.'

Publishers Weekly
'Many writers try to capture life's universals... but Robinson truly succeeds in what is destined to become her second classic.'

Sarah Waters
'A beautiful novel: wise, tender and perfectly measured'

given up!2
having just read about 10 pages, and then realised it was the same 10 pages i'd read the night before...i have now given up, something i rarely do with a book. yes it's well written and evocative, but would a bit of plot development be too much to ask?

Slow, meandering ... but deep and rewarding in parts.3
I found this really hard going. I have been reading prize winning novels and came to this Pulitzer prize winner after a string of Booker prize winners - this was by far the hardest read as it seemed to have no real plot, direction or structure. Its major redeeming quality however is the depth of humanity and belief expressed by the narrating character - an elderly cleryman nearing the end of his life - much of it is extremely moving and ultimately I felt glad to have stuck with it and enriched by the experience.

Very Boring1
One of the most boring books ever, no point. Life is too short, do not waste any more of it reading this rubbish
