Editorial Reviews
From Amazon.com
Unlike the largely acoustic Sour Pie EP that started the buzz, this label debut is a textured, full-bodied work of studiocraft. Dale Penner's rich production and ex-Pixie Joey Santiago's serpentine guitars are a fine counterweight to McNarland's riveting voice and open-wound songwriting. "Water," "U.F.O.," and "Coward" are the best of the hypnotic mid-tempo entries, and all are remarkable enough to explain why her crowd-pleasing version of "In the Air Tonight" didn't make the final cut here. "Numb" is a biting lead single and she heads into Sheila Chandra territory on "Mystery Song," though it's the angry, electrifying "Elmo" on which she takes a star turn. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews
hot STUFF!
It doesn 't surprise me in the slightest that this girl is unheard of in the UK, after all, the Great British charts can seldom find room to accomodate anyone with more than ounce of talent, and Holly McNarland certainly provides a great deal more than that. With her passionately strong, Alanis Morisette-like voice and her cutting lyrics, Holly has crafted a superb album that deserves far more exposure. It would be impossible for me to pick any stand-out tracks because the album is just so consistent, but what I would say is that if you're tempted to buy it, then go ahead, I don't think you'll be disappointed. If you're a fan of almost any of the female American singers of recent years, then this could just be the STUFF that you're looking for!
