Cracking cheese!
This band gets lots of airplay on Bruce Dickinson's Friday rock show and arguably should be bigger than they are. Mind you as a previous reviwer states there is not much "new" on here. They are from Sweden and they conform to much of the Scandinavian stereotype metal, screamed yet melodic vocals (lyrics firmly in the schlock horror/mythic mould), excellent musicianship, huge choruses and loads of squiddly fast paced instrumental passages, pounding bass and drums, need I go on?
Comparisons? Start at Maiden, head east via Judas Priest and enter Stratovarius territory and you might just get there.
Derivative? Yes, but enjoyable none the less. Probably three stars would be about right but I'll give this album and extra one for it's sheer exuberance.
Fantastic old school metal
I bought this album and can honestly say from the moment |I put it in my cd Player I was quite literally blown away, every song is fantastic old school metal played the way bands such as Iron Maiden and Judas Preist had intended, the beuty of this beast is that not only dosen't this album stray from its metal path but every song is incredibly catchy, I bought this album just from hear say from friends who had seen them supporting Municipal Waste and after hearing this metal masterpiece I shall definately be discovering their back catalogue, for me the best album I have purchased in 2007, Long may the reign
Odd mixture
This is a difficult album to review. At one level, it's pretty good - the musicianship in particular is excellent, and the band sound slick and very integrated, like they've been together a long time and fit together very well. But on the downside, the whole thing sounds quite dated and derivative. The lyrics seem to have been taken from stock metal cliche-land, full of references to drinking blood and satan, yawn yawn, the kind of thing even Ronnie Dio would be embarrased to pen. The vocals are a combination of early Helloween and perhaps even Mercyful Fate, though nowhere near as inventive or theatrical as King Diamond. In fact, the vocals are quite difficult to listen to for any prolonged period. So in summary I would say that this album isn't bad - maybe 3 stars is generous - but the complete package is not very innovative, and the band sound at times like they're going through the motions. My recommendation to Wolf is dump your singer and get someone in with more spirit, and improve your lyrics so that they're less cliched.
