Customer Reviews

and it has the best first line in modern literature5
The first time I read this book, I was shocked. The second time I read it, I laughed myself into convulsions. If you like the Marx Brothers, or drugs, you'll like this book.

Hunter S. Thompson is decadent and depraved5
Truman Capote thought that The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved was the best thing that Hunter Thompson did, and that he was better than Tom Wolfe ("but more eratic"). It was also the first Gonzo piece he did. And the first collaboration with Ralph Steadman. Everyone else of course thinks that Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is Thompson's best work, so you can't go wrong here really. This is probrably the best introduction to Hunter S. THompson's writing. Not only is it extremely funny, it's actually very poignant. These works created a revolution in journalism and blew Tom Wolfe's New Journalism clean out of the water. Infact nobody has really come close to acheiving "Gonzo" status since. Nobody else could survive it. Hunter S. Thompson is decadent and depraved.

Buy the ticket, take the ride.....5
Hunter Thompson, master of the literary word, proves in this single work, that he is a true genius. This book is not so much a read, as it is a ride. He takes us through a wild, and twisted journey through Las Vegas in search of the American Dream, through the eyes of Raoul Duke, along with his Samoan attorney, Dr. Gonzo. This is a terrific book, and without a doubt, should've been number 1 on the list of the all time greats. Hunter is a master. As Raoul Duke once said, "Buy the ticket, take the ride."
