Nikon Capture NX 2 Photo Editor5
For anyone using a Nikon camera this software is a really useful adjunct. It is built to handle the Nikon NEF file format but will also work on any jpg file, so people with other makes of camera can use it too. Editing is fast, completely non-destructive and in most cases much easier to accomplish than with, say, Photoshop. I also own Photoshop Elements 7 but rarely use it for run-of-the-mill editing, since Capture NX 2 is so much easier and quicker. Where Photoshop scores is when you need to 'transplant' a portion of one shot into another -- there is no way of doing this in NX 2, but all other edits -- curves, level, altering of saturation, colour correction, sharpening, etc. can be done (and often much more easily) in NX 2.
The really big feature of NX 2 is its U-point technology, enabling you to make enhancements to hue, saturation and brightness to local areas in the photo without having to spend a lot of time making complicated selections (with polygonal lasso etc.) as you would have to do in Photoshop to achieve the same end. For instance, if you have a shadowed face in your photo that you would like to brighten (giving a 'fill-in flash' effect) this is extremely quick and easy to do in NX2 -- simply add a 'Colour Control Point' to the face and you can control the brightness, saturation and hue with that whilst not affecting any other area of the shot. Colour Control Points can be used in a similar way to make skies bluer, leaves greener, etc. etc. -- all without having to make any manual 'selections' as you would have to in Photoshop.
Try it and it will soon become your number one photo editing program!

Brilliant package for Nikon owners5
This is a brilliant package - as an experienced photoshop user and Nikon D300 owner I find it consistently produces better and more intuitive results than any other package. The memory problems are easily resolved if you search the net for advice and basically require you to set up in the right way and download the right service packs. The shortcuts and menus work well and the control point system is excellent. The manual is helpful and clearly laid out but like all manuals needs careful study becuase they always employ technical people with no sense of communication to write them. Definitely worth it and Amazon do it at a very competitive price (you can get badly ripped off if you buy it in the wrong place).

"Must have" package for any serious Nikon DSLR user5
In essence this software tool is a must have if you have any serious investment in Nikon DSLR equipment, in that it is able to manipulate the NEF native Nikon file format images in a non-destructive way, so that should you ever wish to go back to the original as captured file from the camera sometime down the line you can readily do so.

It is a resource hog like all heavyweight image packages but providing you have a modern dual core machine with a good dose of memory you will be absolutely fine, but you can always download the trial version or install the version on your Nikon Cameras CD for 30 days to evaluate the performance on your own system.

I am unable to directly comment as to the pros and cons over Adobe's photoshop, because I am still using V6 of that package.

I would however comment that the user interface in Nikon NX2 is very intuitive and you can get up and running quickly. What is also very refreshing these days is to find a substantial paper manual in the box, enabling you to read up on how to get the best from the package.

Apart form those constrained with lower spec PC equipment I would recommend this package without reservation to any Nikon user and believe that if you take advantage of the 30 day trial version you will see the merits in using the software.
