Synopsis
Based on Jim Butcher's best-selling novels, The Dresden Files chronicles the cases of no ordinary detective. Harry Dresden (Paul Blackthorne) is a wizard, the only one listed in the Chicago phone book. He's got a handle on the crimes that can't be solved by anyone else. Paranormal? No problem. Dresden deals in all matters of supernatural threats. If you need a little hocus pocus or some other worldly advice, Dresden's your man.

Good wholesome entertainment
I think some people really expect to much of a TV series, there's no way there could be the depth of the books, can you imagine how long an ep would have to be? I'm a hard core fan of the Dresden files books and of course have the latest on pre-order, and waiting with bated breath. Having said all that I totally enjoyed the series, some of the characters were a bit off for Jim's actually characters but in spite of all that it was great. I especially liked Paul Blackthorne in the main role, and apart from his obviously difference (his hair) I thought he was Harry, absolutely excellent and funny with a good dash of the black humour Jim puts in his books. I have to say after seeing the series I can see Paul as Harry in my mind when I read all the new stuff. I think giving Bob a body was entirely necessary for the visual medium of TV and Terrence Mann was great in the role and I thoroughly enjoyed his representation. Again, all excellent and I'm so disappointed there isn't going to be a 2nd series!
Great show, so obviously the network cancels it.
It's really sad that such a great show never made it to a second season. This show deserved as long a run as Buffy or Angel had. Great characters, great premise, lots of dark humour, excellent backstory, loads of promise.
I can only hope that the strong and vocal online fanbase (there's currently a long-running petition with over 10,000 signatures) will convince Sci-Fi or some other network to commission a second season of The Dresden Files. It most certainly deserves it.
Get this boxset... you won't regret it!
not read the books yet
so this review is based solely on my experience of the tv show. I'll get onto the books when I can, I promise.
This is a box set containing all twelve episodes, spread over three dvds, of the dresden files. this is a tv show based on a series of novels by writer jim butcher about harry dresden, a private eye/wizard in chicago. he solves occult crimes with the help of bob, a british guy who's disembodied spirit is bound to a skull that is in harry's office, and tries to keep as much of truth as he can from murphy, a policewoman he often ends up working with.
The show has not been renewed for a second season so this is all of it that we will ever get.
Harry basically goes through private eye film noir style plots, with an occult twist. And it's a pretty enjoyable series all in all, thanks largely to the leads. paul blackthorne who plays harry makes him a likeable and laid back character whom you can really root for. his occasional voiceover narration adds to the effect. the actor who plays bob is an excellent foil, and is conspucuous by his absence from episodes he's not in. and valerie cruz as murphy does a good job portraying an ordinary person who is confronted on occasion with something outside her worldview.
some episodes are stronger than others plot wise but none of the weaker ones are bad.
the only extras on this collection are a brief making of documentary, which is quite good for what it is if a bit short, deleted scenes from two episodes, and two commentaries from paul blackthorne and some of the producers on others.
fans of genre television may like to note that claudia black from farscape/stargate appears in the ninth episode as a would be private eye, and turns in a very entertaining performance.
A good little show. Pity it's not coming back. Now, let's order those books....
