WHERE ARE ALL THE BIOGRAPHIES?
The Collins English Dictionary used to be the best. But what has happened? Among its many glories were thousands of biographical references - thumbnail sketches of famous people. Professor John Carey and Prof J. R. Watson singled them out for praise. The biographical entries were essential tools when you were in a hurry and writing an article, or script, and needed a concise description of a famous person. All have been removed! I was going to buy the latest edition of the dictionary, but when I saw the omission I put the book back on the shelf and will have to make do with my 1979 edition. Please restore the biographical references in future editions.
Comprehensive and Profound
This is the best English dictionary one can buy for complex and obscure words and always has those rare and obsolete words one finds in Victorian novels that seem, so often, to escape the Oxford. I do the : 'Guardian;' 'Times;' and 'Telegraph;' Crosswords and will nearly always find words in this Dictionary that unfortunately, again, escape the Oxford. New editions assimilate much of modern language so that one has a contemporaneous and historical literary blend that will satisfy most requirements from the most basic, common reader to the specialist, esoteric academic.
Needs strong muscles!
Very attractive in appearance on the page, and with more words you'll ever need in a lifetime, this dictionary is however extremely heavy, and if you buy it as we did to pass around while playing Scrabble, you may find yourself wishing you had bought something comprehensive but a lot lighter!
