Not a slow cooker, just an electric casserole
Breville VTP036 Slow Cooker, 4.8 Litre
This is a very efficient, good looking electric casserole at a very good price. But it is NOT a slow cooker.
A slow cooker needs to cook above 68 degrees C to kill the bacteria, but not much above 68 degrees to cook really slowly on the low setting - say about 75 degrees. Otherwise, if you put the food in the cooker in the morning and go out to work, when you get home in the evening it will be very overcooked. This is precisely what happened to me with the Breville, so I called the manufacturers to see if there was perhaps a fault with mine. They could not even tell me what was the target temperature for the low setting; but when I measured it, it was well over 100 degrees. No wonder the food was overcooked!
I can now cook beef!
I have never before been able to cook a joint of beef - until now. I have had no problems with 'hard boiling' - this has cooked brisket, stewing steak, rump etc to perfection - unbelievable for me. My family are no longer scared of my cooking.
My New Slow Cooker.
I bought this about two weeks ago and I couldn't be happier.
I got this because my last slow cooker, which I had for about 9 years, had finally died on me. So far I've used it 5 or 6 times for all sorts of meals, all with meat, and the results have been just as good as my old slow cooker, if not better.
It definitely does cook `slow enough' and I've not had any problems with it `hard-boiling' or anything like that.
So I would definitely recommend this slow cooker - it's simple and effective, which is exactly what you should want from a slow cooker.
