Product Description

This lens is ideal for taking pictures during holidays or for view findings or reporters. The EFS 17-85 mm (equivalent to 27-136 mm in 24x36), is a high quality standard zoom, light and versatile. It comes with the most extended focal (x5) in its own range, and is equipped with the most recent Canon image stabiliser. This stabiliser equals 3-grain diaphragms to compensate for any blurring effects, lack of sharpness in image due to vibrations in the device or whilst using it in slow functions. The zoom EFS 17-85 mm integrates a double aspherical lens ensuring excellent contrast and perfect definition on both sides of the image. This system optimizes precision of flash exposure once associated with the Speedlite EX range flash. It comes with the CANON EF-S mount exclusive to Canon SLRs EOS 20D and EOS 300D.

    Step up from Kit Lens4
This lens is pretty sharp at most apertures and has a very quick focus motor.
At wide angles chromatic aberration (bright red fringing) is clearly visible on a 10"x8" print in high contrast areas of the picture but can be reduced in Photoshop. Barrel distortion at the wide end is a bit extreme but again it can be corrected in photoshop.
    The image stabilizer works well.
On balance very good value for money, but if you can afford the 17-55 f2.8 lens it is noticeably sharper across the range and has very little chromatic aberration. The 17-55's slight loss of telephoto is not really significant.

Far better than the 18-55 mm kit lens5
I've bought this lens as a kit lens in Asia with a 400D (why not offer it in Europe as an optionnal kit lens Canon?) and it is the ideal starting lens. Good range (27-136 mm equivalent), sharper than expected, and reasonnably fast.

    Superb5
Despite it arriving late (due to the delivery company rather than Amazon directly), it was certainly worth the wait. The pictures I have captured already are superb considering they have all been taken indoors so far and definately out-perform the standard 18-55mm lens you now get with the eos 400D (the body I am currently using). I have waited a year to buy a replacement for my handy 17-55mm, looking around at all the different options but am glad I stuck with this one! The 17-55mm USM looks too large for my likeing and the cheapest L series version is far too expensive for my budget to allow (even if it is only around £100 more!) However, after reading several magazine reviews I came to learn that this lens is the best all-rounder and cheapest out of the three. Perfect. The Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) is excellant compared to my rather clumsy non-USM 75-300mm zoom lens, which I bought earlier on in the year, and the focusing system has only let me down on the one occasion when experimenting in a very dark hallway (which is to be expected). The IS is astounding and makes a huge difference to your images, meaning that 1/60secs is no longer the most sensible setting for handheld shots!
The only downpoint I have found to be associated with this lens is that you have to buy the unique hood seperately and from a seperate seller (meaning that you cannot expect it all to arrive at the same time/get super saver delivery included) whilst also at additional cost, althouh it is well worth the extra money as it is not only very effective but also helps you, to a certain extent, to forget that three hundred and fifty odd pounds on a new lens, plus however much more for a new filter has just been spent!
Be aware, the lens is a lot larger than the standard zoom so ensure that you have checked it will fit into your kit bag whilst attached to the body before purchasing one!
I now have a super-quality, reliable, fast and accurate focusing lens just in time for Christmas, which will hopefully last for years to come!
Please note: This lens will not work with full-body sensors becasue it is "efs" rather than "ef" (i.e. if you have a Canon eos 5D, 1D/s Mark 2/3 etc. the lens will not work) - a point to bear in mind if you think you will ever consider upgrading (although you could just use the upgrade as a second body to your existing camera and set of lenses; if you can afford it!)
