Manufacturer's Description
The DSC-W200 combines the amazing detail of 12.1 MP resolution with high sensitivity for shooting without a flash even in very low light. Super SteadyShot® image stabilization keeps blur to a minimum, and advanced high-tech features like Face Detection, D-range optimization, and in-camera retouching and red-eye reduction help bring out the best in every shot you take. For shooting and sharing on location, there's a large 2.5"2 LCD screen that makes viewing exceptionally easy. And HD (high definition) output1 lets you share memories in spectacular high definition clarity and detail on compatible HDTV screens.
With more megapixels than most digital cameras, the DSC-W200 captures greater image definition so you can make big prints and tight crops without losing detail. The advanced Sony® Super HAD™ (Hole Accumulated Diode) CCD design allows more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise.
A top-quality Carl Zeiss® 3X Optical zoom lens design helps the DSC-W200 bring distant subjects closer and lets you frame shots quickly for better composition -- a real advantage for family sports, outdoor fun and travel photos.
By automatically controlling focus, exposure, color and flash, this new Sony feature reveals faces in shadow, makes skin tones look more natural and eliminates harsh facial glare -- to help bring out every expression on every face in every shot, so you’ll capture the personalities and emotions that make memories come alive.
At 3 MP resolution, you can shoot effectively without flash even in very low light to preserve the mood and capture fast action at high shutter speeds -- with the Sony Clear RAW™ Noise Reduction system to take care of the picture noise that can ruin low-light shots.
With Super SteadyShot® Image Stabilization, the DSC-W200 compensates for shaky hands and minimizes blur with optical sensors that detect camera movement and send correcting signals to a stabilization lens -- so there’s no need to crop in on your shot to reduce blur.
Thanks to Sony, your photo album can go high-def -- with direct HD output1 to your HDTV screen, so you can view DSC-W200 still photos in spectacular high definition clarity and detail. Your life never looked so exciting!
It’s the high-definition viewing experience that makes photos come alive on HDTV screens, accompanied by your choice of visual effects and any of four preset musical selections stored in memory or your favorite MP3 tunes downloaded from PC to your camera for use as background music.
Because an off-center subject can make your shot more interesting, the DSC-W200 can measure auto-focus precision at 9 points on your screen -- giving you greater creative freedom to compose your image.
Powered by the exclusive Sony Bionz® high-speed processing engine, D-Range Optimization preserves image data in bright highlights and reveals more detail in shadows or backlit areas -- for great results even in difficult lighting conditions.
The DSC-W200 lets you add creative effects to photos after you shoot -- including soft edge filter to soften backgrounds, cross filter to place starry "dazzles" at highlight points, partial color filter to mute surrounding colors, even fish-eye filter to create interesting fish-eye lens effects.
Irritating "glowing eyes" can ruin even the most creative photos -- so the DSC-W200 provides in-camera correction at the touch of a button to reduce lingering red-eye effect that other systems might miss.
The DSC-W200 provides a large, bright 2.5"1 TFT LCD screen that makes it easy to compose shots, check results and read menus even in bright sunlight as well as view and share photos in sharp, natural colour.
n addition to its bright 2.52 LCD screen, the DSC-W200 has a built-in optical viewfinder to allow shooting in traditional rangefinder camera style and save battery power by turning off your LCD screen off.
A quick press of the Home button opens your user-friendly GUI -- and you can select functions by simply moving a cursor vertically or horizontally to the appropriate icon. Function names and the on-screen Function Guide display make it easier to learn camera setup operations.
The DSC-W200 allows you to capture a large number of images without a flash memory card, so it’s great for traveling or for quick candid snapshots.
A built-in slot accepts optional Memory Stick Duo™ media or Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media -- the compact, high-capacity storage media that make it easily to upload photos to your computer or make lab-quality prints at home on your Sony Picture Station™ digital printer (sold separately).
The Sony Smart Zoom® feature intelligently "crops into" the central portion of interest in your photo, avoiding the image degradation of other digital zooms.
Capture VGA (640 x 480) audio/video clips at high frame rate (up to 30 frames per second5), with length limited only by the capacity of your media.
The DSC-W200 provides up to 270 shots3 with a fully charged NP-BG1 Lithium Ion battery -- enough shooting capacity to cover a long weekend or a whole vacation.
Supplied software makes it easier to upload, organize and search photos on your PC -- and provides a convenient map view function to sort photos by location and display their origin on a world map by using an optional GPS unit.

Sony Cybershot DSC-W200 Review
I had had a Sony Cybershot 3.1 mpx for some years which had given fine performance but I wanted an upgrage. Wanting to future proof myself for a few years a 12.1 mpx seemed a bit cutting edge and over the top but what the heck!
I read the few reviews I could find and looked at the info about the camera on the Sony site and Amazons site and decided this camera seemed perfect for my needs. So new was it in May 2007 that I had to wait 4 weeks for Amazons first stock to arrive from Sony.
At last my new camera arrived and after a few weeks of use I can tell you it is FANTASTIC. I wanted it as a family camera, holidays and stuff - but beware.....many digital cameras now do not have an eye-piece view finder they only rely on the LCD screen only.....this sony camera still has a viewfinder you can look through. This is a massive bonus when you are trying to take pictures in very bright sun in bright hot holiday locations, think about it.....you just cannot see the pre-view shot ont the LCD screen in bright sun - the viewfinder allows you to perfectly frame your shot even in places like Egypt where refections from sea/sand etc make it impossible to view the screen. My wife also prefers to use the eyepiece because she cannot always see the picture in the LCD scree so again a bonus.
The camera is very slim, you can slip it in your pocket or bag no problem, the screen is massive and crystal clear - its just brilliant. The 12.1 mpx setting means you can blow your pictures up to A3 size and have them crystal clear but after trying out the setting for a few weeks you will want to adjust back to something more normal - I am using the 5 mpx setting for general holiday shots. Remember the memory used per shot is now megabytes. The camera has its own memory but you will need to buy a memory stick on top. A 4 gig memory stick duo pro these days costs circa £20 so really cheap. Get a couple.
With high memory such as above you dont have to worry about using the video part of the camera, you can shoot hundreds of photos too and just delete any poor ones.
The camera is festooned with built in bits and bobs. You can go to manual settings as well if you want. One thing that's great is the macro settings. I took some close up shots of flowers in the garden using the macro setttings - with the camera built in slide show and music generation you can then link to your TV and play back straight away a professional movie where each photo fades into the next via your selected choices. With the software provided you can edit on your PC or just transfer the images easily or burn to CD/DVD etc. You can even playback your slide show on the camera screen immediately and show your family/friends. You can also add your own music etc via the software provided.
There are all sorts of different modes eg landscape, night, snow etc and all just a rotation of a small dial away. You can even select a rapid take feature where suppose you are taking a pic of your boy playing football, select rapid shot, click - and the camera will take a pic every second or so. In a minute you can have a whole stream of pics and just select the best/clear ones. Greaat for rapid action capture.
I really have enjoyed this camera so far, although I have only had it a few weeks it is packed with goodies and OK a lot you will seldom use but there is loads that will add benefit to your photo taking experience. You can make it as complicated or as easy as you like.
Last few words - remember the camera does not come with a memory stick so as stated about get a couple of 4 gig memory sticks, dont go for 1's or 2's you will want to use the video function sometime. I would also recommend you get another battery which again costs about £22. The battery pack can only be charged by removing it to the charger supplied. So if you are out and the battery goes - you are done for unless you have a charged up spare. The big screens on these digital cameras are great remember but they eat up your power.
The acid test, would I recommend this camera to a friend despite the fact it is not the cheapest out there....YES - DEFFO - Go for it.!!!!
You will love it.
Some additonal info as at Oct 2007 - Just back from a holiday in Jamaica, I used a lot of the settings I had not used before such as low light and very low light, these settings are selectable without the use of flash where evening lighting is present but flash would be harsh. The low light settings came out excellent. I would not recommend low light movie selection but then most movie at night time is poor. This holiday I took hundreds of photos with the 4 meg stick I have and did'nt need to change it despite the fact I also took several minutes of video when I did not have my proper video camera with me. Again I used 5 meg rather than higher settings on this holiday and the photo quality was brilliant. Only use the 12 meg setting if you want to blow the photo up to A3 or so....and how many times will you want to do that really.!!
Still discovering things all the time....
....Anyway hope this helps.
All the best - Colin.
wow 12 megapixels
i bought a sony cybershot DSC P1 about 7 years ago 3.3megapixels. i decided to upgrade: i read countless reviews got a lot of advice- "you dont need any more than 7mp: need 6x zoom at least; get a canon" blah blah..... ignored all the advice and went for size- 12mp. and boy am i glad i did the images are stunning especially when printed on my canon selphy printer. the difference between 3.3 and 12mp is amazing, you can see every freckle on my daughters face, every curl... truly amazing. granted the zoom is only 3x optical but that is irrelevant with 12mp as the software provided in the camera and on the sony disc provided means you can edit to give images that look like they have been taken with a more poweful zoom. i got it on amazon for £193.19 after a 10% discount, coupled with a sony textile soft case for the w series, great case the right size exactly. i also got a sony VMC-MHC1 high definition output cable for viewing images on an HD tv, yet again amazing images. got two 4GB memory sticks. go for it 12mp ask the wife size does matter every time.
Great Camera
Small enough to put in your pocket so that you have it when you want it, big enough to do what you want with it. Having used 6x4 cm cameras in the past I can honestly say that I was not expecting this camera to give me the results I was use to, but it's not half bad. If you just want to point & shoot you can. If you want to play around with shutter speeds & apertures you can. It will even take reasonable quality movies. So many options that you will probably not use most of them but at this price you are not paying over the odds for them. I would suggest that you get a spare battery, you will not want to stop using it & at least one 4mb memory stick.
