A good HD camera that gets you going
USAGE - This camera is a good buy for those looking to enter the world of HD camcorders. You'll be surprised how small it is and how easily it snuggles in to the palm of your hand. It doesn't have a viewfinder, so you'll need to use the screen while filming, which can be a bit of a nuisance when you are running low on battery.
QUALITY - The general quality of the camera is great when there is ample light - in low light it performs good but it does get noisy in very low light. Outside quality is very impressive in 1080 mode. You can film at 30fps in 1080i or 25 fps at 1080p. You can take photos with this too, but the quality is not as good as a dedicated camera taking snaps at 7MP. I was slightly disappointed with the image stabilisation - and I think Sony and Canon cameras are still unmatched in this area - but at this price range - the Samsung R10 does a good job. The optical zoom is also very good and the time it takes to focus on objects is good.
STORAGE - There isn't any on board so you will also need to get a decent sized memory card, I went for the 16GB Integral SDHC card which gives enough space for nearly 2 hrs HD recording at 1080p. You also get a USB memory card reader so you can download your movies on to your PC without the need to connect the camera up.
BATTERY LIFE - This is satisfactory and lasts a couple of hours - it may be worth considering an extra battery but if you only plan to take the odd shot here and there then one battery should suffice before you need to recharge.
TOUCH SCREEN - The R10 has a pretty cool touch screen which allows you to navigate the various features and settings. I found this easy to use and fairly intuitive to get going.
CASE - The R10 comes with a nice grey case which protects it from scratches. It is made of thick-weaved cloth and is not made from plastic. This is good because it does not drastically increase the size of the camera and you can still put it in your pocket whilst it is still in the case.
FINAL THOUGHTS - A good camera for the price. If you are looking for a camera to film your holiday or random moments of life, this is definitely a contender.
Pretty nice
Excellent form factor delivering a great picture given good lighting. It does get pretty noisy with low lighting, though.
My only complaint is that I'm unable to get it to output a 1080p picture to my 1080p TV over either HDMI or component cables. I can get a 1080p picture if I play the movie directly off my memory card though. Samsung tech support is terrible - they tried to convince me my TV isn't 1080p - so I can't determine whether this is by design or a fault with the camera.
This spoilt my experience, but other than that it is a great camera and recommended.
Great little Samsung
Have been playing about with this pocket sized HD camcorder for about a month now and am very impressed.
Size - fits easily in the pocket so can be carried around anywhere with ease, which for us means that we're more likely to use it. Fits nicely in the hand allowing easy access to record/zoom/power/still features.
Image - great quality for something so small. Screen is easily big enough and playback looks great, through TV or PC. Little bit lacking in low light, but then for something this size and in this price range you can't expect miracles.
Battery life - very good.
Controls - easily accessable through the excellent touch-screen icons. All work quickly and saving images is easy too. Inclusion of SD card compatability is just great and means we didnt have to sell our soul to Sony world Memory sticks!
All in all a great little HD camcorder. Only reason it didn't get 5 stars was it's lack of compatibility with Mac using the onboard software.
