Manufacturer's Description
The latest addition to the FinePix range of SLRstyled cameras, the S5500 Zoom features a 4 million effective pixel CCD and an awesome 10x optical zoom lens. The lens gives a 35mm equivalent range of 37370mm, more than enough scope for even the most demanding photographers.

Building on the success of the bestselling FinePix S5000 Zoom, the S5500 retains the ergonomic design and the easytouse functionality of its predecessor. The S5500 Zoom also adds full VGA movie recording at 30 frames per second, custom white balance control, histogram playback and 100% frame coverage; features you would normally expect from a highend digital camera. The professional look and feel to the S5500 Zoom is supported further with an average shutter lag time of approximately 0.05seconds, one of the quickest seen in this style of camera.

Created with ease of use and convenience in mind, the FinePix S5500 Zoom is powered by four AA size batteries or an AC power adapter and comes complete with a Video Out socket for reviewing images and movies on a compatible TV screen. The S5500 Zoom also adds PictBridge functionality, the industry standard for direct printing without the need for a PC or Mac.

    The best, part two5
I thought I would write a second review just to summarise this camera fully: four million pixels, strong build quality, powerful zoom lens (ten times magnification!!!), lovely handling, sharp images, quality movie mode with sound (with limitless recording, space on the card permitting [[so, several minutes worth available if you get a large size card]]), macro mode, pop-up flash, comfortable rubber grip around the body, burst modes (for taking several photos with one press of the shutter), option to shoot in black and white, very compact for a SLR style camera, simple-to-control menus, great battery life for a digicam (get yourself some 2300 or 2400 mah rechargable AA batteries ASAP), the lens has a fast aperture even at full zoom (meaning it lets in enough light that you can take a piccie without a tripod, even when zoomed right in) and I haven't experienced camera shake on images shot at as low as 1/25 of a second (but I have a steady hand!), and, of course, manual control over aperture (f2.8 - f9), shutter (15 seconds - 1/2000 of a second), ISO, white balance and flash output.
If some of that sounds complicated, there are auto modes available for certain types of scene, such as landscape or portraiture, and, of course, full auto mode for snapshots. I'm tellin' you, if your'e not a pro photographer but you want more creative control over your images, or are looking for a solid first buy on which you can improve, this camera is extremely good value. The only negatives I can think of are as follows: the aperture doesn't go up to f22 (as on a full SLR), the shutter cannot be kept open indefinitely for longer exposures, and, inevitably with the zoom lens, this camera is not going to fit in your pocket (although it is small, and very light around your neck).
Again, I feel this camera is terrific value (see my other review) ; and with the price of xd picture cards from the web at a now much more affordable price, this offering from fujifilm really is a bargain ( I highly recommend a 512 megabit xd card, or at least a 256. The camera has a 4 mega pixel 'fine' setting on which, with a 512 mb card, you can take 268 pics!).
I love this camera. Its features really help to keep photography fun. The way it should be! Hope this all helps, fellow Amazonians.

Arguably the best camera I've ever had5
I've been into photography most of my life. I built my own darkroom when I was 14. I'm now 60 and I've owned Pentax, Fuji, Cannon and Olympus cameras. In terms of ease of use and results I have never come across a camera that is so trustworthy. The results are wonderful time after time. The manual settings allow me to go back to my youth if I so please and also to disagree with the auto' chip when I think that I know best.
I truly believe that this camera is so good it may well see me out. On at least three occasions it has compensated for my forgetting things like backlight and saved pictures that I could have lost completely. I would advise anyone to buy this camera.
If you know nothing about photography it will do everything for you. If you are, like me, a lifelong fan it will allow you to do all the things you did on SLR cameras with the luxury of fully auto. The speed of processing when a picture is taken is also very impressive and allowed me to snap away to my hearts content at my grandson's Easter show.
Buy this camers and you won't regret it, it really is in a class of its own.
Wonderful to use and very good looking as well, what more could you need ?

    Dubious ? don't be......BUY IT !5
Having used both conventional film SLR and compact digital Cameras, this camera beats them all. The 10x optical zoom is superb....I personally have found very little tendency for Photos taken at the maximum zoom to suffer from camera shake, the results tend to be sharp quality images almost every time.
Another plus in my estimation is the light weight of the camera,it is actually lighter than my Kodak 3x zoom compact digital, a real consideration if you are going to be carrying it around alot !
The build quality is very good, and the camera "feels right", with the main features being readily to hand.
Finally, I found the electronic viewfinder to be very useful, as it can be used to good effect when sunlight has cut down the visibility of the main screen, also, a real plus is that this view finder "looks" through the camera lens just like an SLR, so what you see is what you get on the photo.
There are enough features on this camera to keep the keenest enthusiast happy, conversely, it can be operated very simply if so desired.
Any criticisms ? the supplied memory card ( 16mb ) is too small, buy a 512mb card asap.
