Gamera 3 - Hollywood 0
The third in Suzuke Kaneko’s 90s Gamera updates, Gamera 3 is a dark but often visually beautiful film that skilfully blends character and plot with drama and destruction.

The film picks up on threads laid done in the two previous movies, with the bat-like Gyaos returning to threaten mankind once again. Thrown into the mix is a new monster, the Iris, who draws its power from a young schoolgirl, Ayana, who blames Gamera for the death of her parents.

With this basic premise, Kaneko weaves a mature movie steeped in Asian mythology but with Hollywood production values. Visually, this is a stunning movie – imagine Industrial Light and Magic handled the visual effects and you’ll get an idea as to the quality on show. In one shocking sequence, one of Gamera’s fireballs sweeps down the street tossing bystander’s into the air. The mid-air battle between Gamera and Iris is a tour-de-force of design and imagination, while the final stand-off inside Kyoto Railway Station delivers an emotional punch.

Kaneko also manages to achieve what Hollywood often fails at – balancing the need for spectacle with characters and a story line that drives the movie along rather than filling time in-between set pieces (also a big fault of Toho’s Godzilla series). Unusually too - especially for a Japanese film - is the largely female cast and their (positive) impact on events in the story. These are no screaming damsels waiting to be rescued, the women in Gamera 3 are the sassy ones while the guys run around in circles.

The Japanese title of the film is Gamera 3: The Incomplete Struggle, which will make sense after… well, that would be spoiling the fun.

To call Gamera 3 one of the best Japanese fantasy films of all time is to perhaps damn it with faint praise in genre with a largely poor reuputaion. Gamera 3 is one of the best Japanese movies of any genre and in terms of global cinema, one of the best fantasy films of all time.

If you come into this film expecting a Bruckhiemer-style popcorn thriller, look elsewhere. But if you want a film that makes you think, makes you care about the characters, makes you marvel at the detail and care of every shot, and also makes giant monsters something scary and believable, Gamera 3 is welcome sight.

ONE OF THE GREATEST MONSTER MOVIES I'VE EVER SEEN!
This should rank alongside the original KING KONG (1933) and the original GODZILLA (1954) as one of the best monster movies ever made. It also puts the godawful American GODZILLA (1998) remake to shame!
GAMERA 3: THE REVENGE OF IRIS is the third in the trilogy of updated films featuring Japan's favourite giant turtle. The film focus on a sullen teenage girl, who lost her parents when Gamera fought Gyoas, and discovers a blood-sucking creature, which she names Iris after her dead pet cat. She plans to use Iris for revenge against Gamera. But Iris is not what itseems....
The storyline is very compelling and the human characters are well developed. The special effects are some of the best, EVER, to come out from Japan. Gamera, Iris and Gyoas hardly look like men-in-monster suits at all!
Like the wonderful THE RETURN OF THE KING (2003) did for THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy (2001-2003), GAMERA 3: THE REVENGE OF IRIS ends the HEISEI GAMERA trilogy (1995-1999) with a bang and not a whimper like the painfully disappointing THE MATRIX REVOULTIONS did for THE MATRIX trilogy(1999-2003).
I strongly recommend this dark and powerful masterpiece to any fan of science-fiction or fantasy. Trust me, it's REALLY good.

the 3rd in a series and boy does it pack a punch. what i like about the heisei era of gamera films is a decent enough storyline to keep you interested which are usually missing from kaiju films. especially the ones made in this era.

the story is about a young girl whose parents were accidentally killed by gamera during the events of the 1st film of the trilogy, resulting in an intense hatred towards gamera. when the girl discover the monster iris, who has just hatched from an egg, she establishes a bond with the creature. her quest for revenge against gamera becomes a possibilty when iris learns hatred towards the giant turtle also, resulting in a battle between the two.

the special effects are even better than that of the previous title, attack of legion, with the gyaos taking realistic evasive manouvres from gamera's fireballs, people being tossed around as gamera storms through the city, and theres even gamera and iris tearing a train station apart as they beat the [] out of each other. iris also looks good as most shots of him involve CGI in some way(the traditional rubber suit but with CGI tentacles). it's an ok length a film as well, not too long and not too short, the balance is just right.

the special features are also worth a look, with optional language settings, trailers, gag reel and even commentary from gamera himself!!! overall, its a great buy and a must have for any kaiju or gamera fan. you wont be disappointed
