Synopsis
Doctor Who and his assistant land on 20th Century Earth only to discover it inhabited by dinosaurs. Reuniting with the Brigadier they discover that two scientists are responsible, using time travel.
From the Back Cover
Arriving back on modern-day Earth, the Doctor and Sarah discover London is deserted and under martial law. They eventually find an army patrol, but are arrested as looters and are sent to a detention centre as prisoners. But as their journey begins, their transport comes under attack by a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Dinosaurs have invaded London! UNIT has been called in to assist the army with the running of the city and to try and find a solution to the problem. Released from captivity, the Doctor takes up his old role of UNIT’s scientific advisor in order to help try and discover why dinosaurs keep appearing and disappearing from London’s streets.
The Doctor suspects a deliberate plan is causing the dinosaur menace, but who is behind the scheme? Who amongst his allies can be trusted? And when Sarah vanishes, just how does she find herself on a spaceship carrying hundreds of people in suspended animation towards a new life on a distant New Earth?

Great story, ignore the special effects
Malcolm Hulke, the writer of this story, was one of the best writers in Doctor Who's long history. His knack of combining god plots with a degree characterisation several shades above the normal 2D ciphers featured in of a lot of Doctor Who episodes, usually made for highly entertaining stories.
I believe Invasion of the Dinosaurs was his last contribution to the show before his untimely death. If you ignore the dodgy special effects (this WAS made 30 years ago on a shoestring BBC budget) and concentrate on the story, the acting and the characters, you'll love it. If you want cutting edge dino action, may I suggest buying Jurassic Park III? Jaw dropping special effects are not what Who was about, so those disappointed by the effects should really be looking elsewhere.
Prehestoric in theme, but not in pace!
Okay, the quality of the dinosaurs can be compared with the Talons of Weng-Chiang rat (erm, a bit dodgy), but there is real pace to this, the 4th last story of the Jon Pertwee era. Although Jon Pertwee's performance seems a bit tired, and Sarah Jane is ultimately a little irratatingly enthusiastic, 'Invasion of the Dinosaurs' is a great script, nicely paced and very watchable.
Malcolm Hulke (Writer) is one of the truly underrated authors of Doctor Who, and arguably the only 'multi story' writer never to produce a real turkey. The biggest distraction of this story is most definately the visual effects, and maybe the DW creative team were a little ambitious. If you are looking for cutting edge computer generated dinosaurs, then you will likely be dissapointed with this video. However, there is always the possibility that the Doctor Who restoration team will tinker with 'Invasion of the Dinosaurs' and replace the laughable dinosaurs with some computer wizadry for the DVD release in 20 (well, who knows...) years time. Whatever will computer graphics look like then? Hm, my mouth is watering at the thought.
Adios video, its been great fun...
Reclaim the least popular stories!
It's time to reclaim some of the least popular stories and realise that it is okay for the FX to be terrible, it really is the acting and writing that matters and this is a great example, a totally wonderful and enjoyable slice of Who which has glove puppet Dinosuaurs. I say love those cute little plastic puppets and enjoy it for what it is, Dr.Who!!! Dr.Who was always part pantomime as well as part detective thriller, horror movie, shakespearean drama, etc, So take it for what it is and just relish the quality of the story. It's terrific! Next stop, Time Flight, followed by the wonderful Warriors of the Deep, Twin Dilemma, Time Lash...I could go on and on, but I wont. Invasion of the Dinosaurs is great Dr.Who! (with bad FX)!
