Surprisingly fun to play!
To anyone who is curious, I imported this game from the US, when it came out. I was expecting a pretty rubbish game, since when I played a spyro game on the ps2 (Enter The Dragonfly), I found it was fully based on platforming and it was a bit boring.
This DS game is different though. This is just my opinion, but the developers really nailed the formula with this game. There is a perfect balance between an interesting story (with hollywood voice acting from elijah wood e.t.c), platforming, action, good level design and even simple but fun mirror puzzles.
Its just really fun to play - the levels are like huge arenas (and pretty gorgeous considering the hardware) in which you can jump, glide, breathe fire and attack enemies. There is a nice pickup system where red gems are for health, purple ones are powerups and so on, and this usually works well. You get to guide Spyro through several vast and well designed levels, while encountering a boss every now and again.
As well as standard melee attacks, you also get four magic breath attacks (fire, earth, lightning, ice), which I found impressive- also, they're really useful for times when you are surrounded with enemies. Periodically through the game, you will get dumped in a medieval arena stage, which is basically a brawler level where you can try out different attacks.
The graphics are great! Picky people who are used to the ps2/xbox might not be excited but the fact that the game is fully 3D is a great thing for me, because it gives you much more freedom. The framerate is absoloutely solid most of the time, and the camera is jerky but just about bareable considering there are much worse 3D games than this! Trust me, considering the size and sheer amount of levels to play with, you most likely won't be disppointed.
The only thing I can truly critise in this game is the save points. Unlike most other games, the issue of saving isn't really mentioned. The game automatically saves for you up to a certain point, and usually this is a good thing, but some levels are pretty big so it might be problematic.
In conclusion, when it comes out, either buy or rent this game! If you like 3D platformers with plenty of action, or adventure games with interesting stories, this is a must have -, this is the best action based ds game I have played!
Oh I forgot there are 5 single-player mini games as well, which are a great distraction from the adventure levels.
Not worth it
Positives:
Story line is quite good and the new skills you can obtain are quite a nice feature
Negatives:
Although I generally enjoy games like this, I eventually gave up on spyro. The reason? Well I found the game is completely full of glitches, I seemed to spend half my time falling off a cliff and came to the conclusion that you would only land on where you intended if you jumped in a specific manner.
The teleporter also will only let you travel to specific other portals from any one portal - which is very annoying when you just leveled up and have to spend ages to get back to the elders.
All in all, the game is relatively fun, but for me the frustration of making the same jump over and over just came too much!
Spyro's fun to play
Since playing shadow legacy, i've been put off from playing spyro. I didn't enjoy the game as i couldn't complete it because i couldn't turn invisible. However, seeing the price it was, i decided to give it another shot.
In my opinion, this game is much better than shadow legacy. Firstly, the graphics are now 3d and are close to ps2 graphics. The different environments really shine through and there are lots of levels to complete, along with many different enemies to defeat. The story is very good and the voice casting is great, with Elijah Wood, Christina Rici along with others and all are suited to the characters they are playing. There are powers and moves to learn, and i liked how the stylus was used to finish an enemy. The mirror puzzles are very clever and really get you thinking, and are also offered as an extra which includes extra puzzles. The levels aren't that long and it automatically saves after each level completed. There are three save slots so another bonus. There is an arena mode where you battle enemies without having health refills and proves to be a fair challenge. The music really adds atmosphere and is good to listen to. The power ups are good to use and i liked using them all.
However, there were a few things which did bother me. This game is very short- infact, the story mode lasted 4 hours 14 minutes (game times you). There is an option to play the game in fury mode (unlimited fury power) or god mode (this means you never die), however i feel this is slightly unfair as the story mode should have been a little longer, and going through the game in god mode feels like cheating as you can't die. I also tried to use fury power but to be honest, i couldn't see what it does and it didn't add to the gameplay. The volume is quiet, even at full on both the game and on my ds. Although i found the stylus control to be fun, it sometimes wouldn't register what i had done, and gets repetative using it all the time. Also, why are there so many of the same enemy? I would defeat one, then another would re-appear in the same spot and so on. I don't mind when this happens one or twice, but more than three times is a bit ridiculous (on a few occasions, this happened six times or they wouldn't be defeated at all). I also found it annoying when Spyro collapsed and went to gain a new skill. The first time this happened, i thought i had died! These dragons are all the same- run on the outside and hit them when they wobble with your new found power until you go back to the level. I also bought every power up quite a few levels before i came to the final battle so this is not too difficult. The story, although good, seems to start from a previous game and ends very suddenly. The final battle is the same as the four big dragons and very easy to do. I thought there would be a big battle so i was disapointed when it ended so suddenly and after only a few hours of play.
Overall, the game is very short but enjoyable at the same time (hence the three stars overall but four for fun). I think the puzzles are clever and the stylus actions add something new to Spyro. Good for all ages and for those with not so much time on their hands.
