Editorial Reviews
From the Author
"Experience Royal Dornoch" expresses the personality of one
of the finest and most famous golf courses in the world. It is neither a
research tome nor a photographic nor literary essay nor a tour de force of
computer technology nor a participative medium, but something unique which
combines some of the best elements of all of the above.
The publishers assert on the back cover that "this book is like no other,"
and most readers of the book have heartily agreed. It is best described as
a high-end personal course guide and/or aide-memoire to your experience of
the course. Just small enough to fit in your bag, it is big enough to
enhance, but not dominate, your coffee table, and would fit nicely into a
comfy and accessible nook in your library. It integrates:
1. Artistically enhanced photo imagery of each hole, using proprietary
techniques and technologies created by the publisher (OptimizeGolf). Taken
from various angles, these images provide a fascinating schematic sense as
to how the Royal Dornoch looks and plays which is as close to being there
as can be achieved in two dimensions.
2. Unique, witty and knowledgeable descriptions of the Club, the
Championship course and each of its holes by Richard Goodale, an
accomplished writer who has been a member of Royal Dornoch for 25 years
3. Some stunning photography (mostly from Glyn Satterly and Eric Hepworth,
but also including David Scaletti¡¦s magnificent early morning view of the
humps and hollows of the 8th and an excellent image of the course at sunset
(or is it daybreak?) by Craig MacKay)
4. An interactive section at the end where one can record their own
experiences of Dornoch, in general and hole-by-by hole, on both a tabula
rasa and an image of each hole.
As good as are the photography and the prose, the design content of the
book is what really sets it apart. The pictures, writing and schematics are
fully integrated and the didactic and personalised elements of the
¡§experience¡¨ of reading the book blend together seamlessly. If there is
an "author" of this book it is the publisher.
This book must be seen to be appreciated.
