Edminson on a good cure for bad temper and F.W. Harvey celebrating the comical duck. Customer Reviews
'Poetry Please!' is absolutely certain to please...
Please do not let the generous five stars that I have awarded this book mislead you into thinking I am prone to exaggeration!
I consider myself quite cynical and discerning, and not at all likely to base my judgement upon reputation or high praise alone. Consequently, when I assert that this is a fine, varied, and beautiful collection of poems, I am subjectively stating that I was immensely satisfied with my purchase of this book, and the receipt may remain in ashes for all I care.
The 100 popular and best-loved poems have been well-chosen and cover all aspects of life: from life and love to death and regret. Humour and sincerity, and all such factors are balanced perfectly resulting in a veritable treasure-chest of worlds and images to step into, via the words of such well-loved poets as Auden, Keats, Kipling, Blake, Tennyson, Wordsworth and Shakespeare.
For those who give substantial weight to the actual presentation and physical production of the book itself, as I admit to doing also, you can rest assured: the book is presented beautifully with a tasteful choice of colours and illustrations, and these are all printed on fine quality glossy paper with a strong spine and cover, even though it is essentially a paperback.
I cannot emphasise enough the importance of owning this book. Even if you possess every work within its pleasantly-presented pages, it is still an invaluable addition to your bookshelf, if only to have a lasting and highly readable copy that will not be reduced to shreds in a matter of months, which is the inevitable and sad fate of so many paperbacks in the hands of an avid reader.
As an introduction to poetry for the uninitiated, or as a well-chosen compilation of the best for the seasoned literature expert, Poetry please remains a pleasure to read or even just to dip into at random on occasion!
Don't be confused by the title - this is 'Poetry Please'
This is my absolute favourite collection of poems, with great ones you may already know or think you know, and many others you are sure to enjoy.
As I particularly enjoy reading poetry aloud, this slim book, is simply perfect.
However, the description here might lead you to believe this is a follow-up volume to the first 'Poetry Please' collection. It is not, it is a rest and rebound edition of the original collection, and not (as some might expect) the ninth in a series.
