Voice of a Great Diva
Diva is not a title to be used lightly. Galina Vishnevskaya has one of the greatest soprano voices of the 20th century. These 3 CDs show the range and variety of tone available. The purity and power of the voice is amazing.
One place to start listening might be Track 19 of CD 1. The unaccompanied voice is beautifully tuned in this Russian operatic masterpiece. Also on this CD the London Philharmonic accompanies her, giving a hint of the dramatic and operatic soprano. The Mussorgsky song-cycles demonstrate the different vocal colours of the different characters. On CD 2 songs of Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky are lovingly accompanied by her husband Mstislav Rostropovich at the piano. The couple know and understand this repertoire intimately. On CD 3 Prokofiev is represented by Russian Folk Songs. Galina also sings Seven Romances on Verses by Alexandr Blok, by her friend Shostakovich, with Rostropovich accompanying on the cello. 'The City Sleeps' is a particular favourite of mine. The 1995 digital remastering of these recordings from the late 70s gives an appropriate setting for this great voice. These CDs are special.
