worst support imaginable
I ended up with the Norton Security products on my PC because it came pre-installed and the easy option seemed to be to keep on renewing (and occasionally upgrading).
You will be fine whilst the product is working.
Sooner or later though it will stop working. You might start getting error messages at startup time or bits of functionality will stop working. This has happened to me over the years when various Windows updates have been installed which conflict with the Norton stuff.
When it does stop working you will wish you had never even heard of Norton because you will need to use Symantec Support. It is dreadful. One option is to "chat to an analyst" online - this will take you hours because you get huge streams of strange stuff sent to you to respond to. You will end up with a massive transcript which barely resembles English. In the end you will decide that it is a waste of time.
You might then opt for the free email support. Their answer for nearly every single problem you hit will be to uninstall and reinstall their software. This is very time consuming and never fixes the problem. In fact it generally makes it worse. They will ask you to uninstall using their "removal tool". Not even this specialist removal tool seems to remove the software very well. You will be asked to re-install over and over again. It never fixes the problems. In the end they will give up on you and stop responding to your emails even though they havent fixed your problem.
It is at this point that you will decide that life is too short and that you will switch to another security provider.
I went down the free software route (AVG and Comodo). Both are equally easy to set up and use as the Norton stuff and you can get sensible help on how to fix problems on the free forums (for AVG at least).
I cant imagine ever buying Norton/Symantec stuff ever again - its simply not worth the hassle.
Does Not Incclude Anti Spam
Just a warning for anyone like myself upgrading to IS 2007 from IS 2006, rather than renewing subscription, this version does not contain Norton Anti Spam. Apparently AS can be dled as a free add-on, but I have not been able to locate this on the horrendous maze that is the Symantec web site. Personally I'll solve the problem by changing my e-mail client to 'Thunderbird 1.5' which contains its own Spam filter..
Also be aware that if after install it reports your subscription not renewed, go to the activation page & re-activate, EVEN if the page reports your software as activated.
I would also recommend reading the reviews at Amazon.com, more comprehensive than those here, which will describe some compatability issues.
Thus far Norton IS 2007 appears to be working fine, of course the great thing is that it is updated alomst weekly so any bugs may be fixed 'on the fly' during your annual subscription.
Norton Internet Security 2007 and Norton AntiVirus 2007
I bought both of these products being guided by Amazon as the AntiVirus being the 'perfect partner' for the Internet Security package. This is false information. The Internet security package contains an antivirus package already and when you try and load the AntiVirus, you get a message saying that there is already an AntiVirus package installed and you should delete it.
My conclusion is that there is no point in buying both and it is disappointing that Amazon should market products like this. Unfortunately, I did not discover this until I had both packages open.
