Chaotic fun
The third and final story in the Key2Time trilogy from Big Finish is a triumph of acting and atmosphere. Peter Davison's Fifth Doctor is on song as he fights to prevent the loss of his beloved TARDIS, and the return of an old friend is a real bonus for loyal fans.
The Timelord and his companion Amy materialise on board a spaceship piloted by the slug-like Teuthoidians, and promptly see the TARDIS jettisoned into space. If this isn't bad enough, the ship's engines are about to explode and another ship appears, intent on destroying the Teuthoidian vessel...
I think this story arc has gone from strength to strength and The Chaos Pool provides a fitting finale. With plenty for long in the tooth Whovians to get nostalgic about: The Key to Time, The Black and White Guardian and the return of one of The Doctor's old allies; plus some great new aliens and a brilliant twist, this audio is the complete package. Big Finish have come flying out of the starting gates in 2009, and one senses the best is yet to come...
law vs order
a new doctor who audio play featuring peter davison as the fifth doctor. this is the third in a trilogy, following on from Key 2 Time: The Judgement of Isskar (Doctor Who) and Dr Who Destroyer of Delights (Big Finish Dr Who) and you're better off starting with those otherwise this will be hard to get into. it also helps to have seen Doctor Who: The Key to Time (Limited Edition Numbered Complete 7 Disc Box set) [DVD] [1978] otherwise some elements of this story might not make sense to you.
but if you are familiar with all the above then this is a very satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. the doctor and the other characters who are after the key to time all end up together on the same planet, and the resulting confrontations decide the fate of the universe.
this is not a big explosive climax, but one that is resolved thanks to some excellent character development. The story builds nicely for the first three episodes and then has a final part that does manage to deliver on it's promise. it oontains a few strong moral debates that are perfectly in keeping with the style of similar ones the fifth doctors era. excellent dialogue, some moments that will make you stand up and cheer, and a few that will make you yell in surprise [if you're familiar with the stories mentioned earlier] make for a satisfying listen.
