A welcome return for the eighth doctor
Back for another series are Lucie Miller (Susan Sheridan) and the Doctor (Paul McGann). Following on from the coda to the last series the adventure starts with the Headhunter shooting Lucie who is back in Blackpool having seen the Doctor fall apparently to his death when defeating Morbius.
The writers go to town on this episode and layer several plot twists one over the other including an excellent moment at the mid point which can't be revealed for spoiler reasons.
Unlike the first two series the format has gone to two episodes back to back instead of a long episode - whether it is that or not but the story seems packed with plot / character and twist.
Apart from Lucie gets back together with the Doctor, there is also a story line for the Orbis tentacled amphibians defending their planet from the mollusc like invaders. This becomes the only weak element of the story as the resolution to the invasion of the molluscs is somewhat brutal.
The writers have also maanged to re-invigorate the relationship between Lucie and the Doctor which I hope they can sustain.
Finally listen to the end for the opening of an story arc - something the first Lucie adventures also had, not the second.
This is thoroughly recommended
waterworld
first audio in a new season of adventures for the eighth doctor and his companion lucie miller. this resolves the cliffhanger that ended the second. and whilst you could get into it relatively easily without having heard that it's probably better to follow this in order as certain things will make better sense otherwise.
this story is complete on a single disc and has two episodes each of twenty five minutes duration.
the story follows on from the end of the previous season in that it sees lucie and a certain former enemy head off to find the doctor. the latter is on a rather strange planet, and some aliens have designs on the place.
the first episode flits back and forth between lucie the doctor and the aliens. the former scenes come to life the most thanks to some excellent dialogue. only in the last few minutes of the episode when lucie and the doctor are reunited does it really click, thanks to a surprising cliffhanger that will put you through as many emotions as lucie goes through.
this is like the first story for a new doctor on tv as he's not quite himself and takes a while to get together again. and they've added a story to go with it.
things do come together well in the second episode as the alien threat and a certain other problem with the planet combine to leave the three main characters facing some hard choices. all of which leads to an emotional ending you may not forget in a hurry.
do listen to the very end of the closing credits as there's a scene there.
and to the end of the disc for a trailer for the next in the season.
this is not a classic release and it does take a while to get going but it's solidly enjoyable and does what it needs to. and this particular doctor companion team have a great chemistry together so it's great to have them back
