In "The Dog Listener", Jan Fennell changed the way we think about our best friends. Now, in this indispensable companion volume, she deals with the day-to-day practicalities of putting those principles to work. In "The Practical Dog Listener", Jan Fennell distils her ideas into a simple 30-day guide that will enable everyone to use her remarkable methods in a practical context. She covers every element of pet ownership - from introducing a dog to its new home and handling it in public, to dealing with behavioural problems. With detailed sections on everything from exercise to diet, there are problem-solving guides dealing with worries such as biting or anxiety. Once again Jan illustrates her points with entertaining and inspiring real-life cases from her own work with damaged and delinquent dogs. She even tells the saga of the Devil Dog - a tale to reassure even the most desperate owner that perseverance really does pay off! The book contains easy-to-follow line drawings, which accompany the text, along with two picture sections.

Amazon.co.uk Review
If dog owners up and down the land were heaving huge sighs of relief when Jane Fennell's first book on tackling canine behaviour hit the shelves, they will be building shrines to her for years to come after reading her follow up, The Practical Dog Listener. While The Dog Listener proved to be a fascinating anecdotal study of the various behavioural patterns of man's best friend, many found it lacking in simple hands-on advice. This new volume thankfully corrects that and offers plenty of sound, sensible advice on training dogs in the simplest of tasks, such as walking to heel or sitting on command to more advance techniques such as curbing the over-zealous greeting of guests or introducing new animals to the house. Her style does not involve force, or raising the voice and is more about understanding what it is your dog is trying to tell you and acting accordingly, rather than forcing it to lose instinctive and in-built behavioural traits. The advice is clear, simple and easy to follow and does produce some incredible results--if you have the patience (and if you don't you really shouldn't own a dog in the first place). This is a perfect book for those who have owned a dog all their lives, or for people thinking about taking a dog into their home. In years to come it will still be regarded as an essential dog owner's manual and your pooch will be as glad that you invested in it as you will be. --Jon Weir
Review
'British dog owner Jan Fennell has devised a revolutionary method of training. It's gentle, simple and remarkably effective.' Mail on Sunday 'Jan Fennell may not have danced with wolves, but she's stood nose to nose with them -- and if she was given half a chance, I'm sure she could make lions lie down with lambs.' Daily Record
About the Author
Jan Fennell became well known through Channel 5's programme 'The Dog Listener' ('It was amazing.' - the Daily Mail). Her first book of the same title proved to be an international success, and she has since published 3 more titles with us. Jan has appeared on Yorkshire TV, in the series 'Problem Pooches' and is often on the radio. She lives in Lincolnshire but her work takes her all around the country.

gr8 book, but buy the newer 1st one!
what a FANTASTIC book. I just could not write anything about how good this book is without ending up writing 5000 words!!!
So, why the 2* rating? - Well, it is because you do not need to buy this 2nd book of Jan's now as this WHOLE book is now included in the back of her first one! "The Dog Listener". (Just look for the one with the little red blob/star on the front cover. Top left corner).
Annoyingly, Amazon chose not to mention this, and I ordered both last week. Doh. Anyway, because the book is soooo good, i'm going to keep the redundant 'practical dog listerner' and give it to a friend.
The 2 stars is for Amazon, but this book gets 5.
scott.
Practically - it works!! A must for every dog owner!!
This a superb follow up to Jan Fennell's "The Dog Listener", going further, this time, in the practical appliance of her training philosophy. The book is easy to follow, and enabled us to systematically retrain our dogs, who were in need of a few manners to say the least. The way this book works is amazing when you apply yourself and follow the advice given by Jan. There is no longer any need for confrontation or physical discipline, as the book teaches you about the dog and what he needs, ie guidance and leadership, and then how to achieve this!
Excellent guide for dog lovers everywhere, thanks Jan!!!
The Practical Dog Listener
This book is excellent. If you have always believed that in some way you could communicate to your dog this is the book to read. It tells you how to improve your dogs well being and how to remove the responsibility it feels it has to carry because we have forgotton how to work and understand our dogs. Jan's method is kind and gentle and can only improve your relationship with your dog. Wonderful recommend it to anyone. One point I would make that you should read her first book The Dog Listnener before reading the Practical Dog Listener, for a more in depth understanding of her methods.
