Synopsis
Competitive obedience is a fast growing activity in the UK, in which dogs perform feats of obedience for their handlers, ranging from the simple 'Sit' to the challenging 'Sendaway'. This book covers all aspects of the sport - from basic training for the beginner to competition shows for the more experienced. Suitable for novices and those looking to improve their performances.

You may need to supplement this with another book
This book is excellent if you are training in a club, or with a professional instructor, because it summarizes many of the lessons that a professional will teach you and can be a great refresher to class lessons.
However, the title is misleading. The steps aren't broken down in as much depth as say, "Clicker Training for Obedience", so it is unlikely to satisfy someone who wants to teach obedience to their dog directly from a book.
Try this in conjunction with "Clicker Training for Obedience" (Morgan Spencer) and "Competitive Obedience for Winners" (Brian McGovern) and we'll look forward to seeing you and your canine pal at Crufts in the near future.
Disappointing
I was a bit disappointed in this book really...it is written in a pretty old-school type way. Although using more modern positive training methods for obedience training, it seemed very old fashioned. I didn't like the style of writing - everything was a bit complicated with the steps that were described (put you left leg down while you twist 40 degrees to the left and lean back with one shoulder while holding a treat in your left hand at an anti-clockwise angle to the dogs left ear etc etc - slight exaggeration but this is how the steps came across to me).
So this may appeal if you are into this kind of thing, but I couldn't get on with it.
It does however, set out the basic training principles of competitive obedience training - but I would suggest trying to rent it from a library rather than buying it!
Very useful
I found this book very helpful, guides step by step, having been away from Obedience for over 10 years( working German Shepherds)starting again now with a Border Collie, it was nice to see a fresh approach.
